son of Deacon Edward RICE
and Agnes BENT.
He died 25 Sep 1719 at Sudbury1 {p19},45 {p2},11 {p322}.
He represented the Town of Sudbury in the Massachusetts General
Court (legislative assembly) in 1707 at Boston, MA1 {p17}.
Edmund Rice was a member of the church at Sudbury where he was a Deacon.
On 6 June 1710 John Rice surrendered to his brother Edmund Rice, by deed, all his right
to land by "the spring", and on which some part of Deacon Edmund
Rice's house then stood...
"At the request of Mr. John Rice and Deacon Edmund Rice, we
have stated a way from John Rice's house by the southerly side

Anna RICE
[QQ86, w30] (Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 19 Nov 1661 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p6},
daughter of Deacon Edward RICE
and Agnes BENT.
She died 2 May 1731 at Westborough, MA,
wife of Thomas1 {p23},57 {p251}.
She married
Thomas RICE 10 Jan 1681/82,
(literally January 1681 per vital records, 11th month 1681 per Ward,
but November 1717 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Marlborough, MA,
(in Sudbury per Supplement)1 {p23},2 {p2},14 {p2},3 {p300}.
He was born 30 Jun 1654 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p6},2 {p2},
died in 1747,
according to the Boston Gazette, which claimed Thomas died at age 94.
This is presumed to be erroneous, since the same article is demonstrably
wrong about the ages of other Rices. However, we have no other, better
evidence for his death1 {p23},26 {26 December 1768},
son of Thomas RICE
and Mary KING.
Ward asserts that Thomas had a wife Mary who died at Watertown in
1677, but that was really his uncle Joseph's wife.
He resided in 1677 at Marlborough, MA1 {p23}.
He was an original member of the Westborough church, founded in 1724.1 {p23}
He represented the Town of Marlborough for several years in the
Massachusetts General Court (legislative assembly) in Boston.1 {p23}
They resided after 1717 at Westborough, MA,

Dorcas RICE
[QQ103, w31] (Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 29 Jun 1664,
(January per Ward) at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p6},2 {p2},
daughter of Deacon Edward RICE
and Agnes BENT.
She died 24 Mar 1753 at Westborough, MA
(under the name Forbush),
widow of Thomas57 {p238}.
She was dismissed from the Marlborough Church and admitted to the Westborough Church 25 Jul 17251 {p21}.
There have been suggestions that Dorcas Rice first married a John
Weldon or Walderne (see, for example, the LDS Ancestral File).
Indeed, the marriage of a Dorcas Rice and John Walderne appears in
the published vital records of Wenham, MA on 22 Sep 1680
(transcribed from the Essex County court records). The marriage
is also entered in the Salem vital records, but with a date of
25 Sep 1679. Further, that marriage resulted in at least two
children, sons Edward and Ebenezer, recorded at Wenham in 1686
and 1696, respectively. However, there is no evidence that the
Wenham Dorcas is the same Dorcas shown here. Indeed,
since Ebenezer Walderne was born at Wenham after our Dorcas had
begun raising a family in Marlborough, we must conclude that they
are different.58,36
She married
Thomas FORBUSH.
He was born 7 Mar 1667 at Cambridge, MA
(under the name Farrabas)47,1 {p21},
died 20 Mar 1737/38 at Westborough, MA57,
son of Daniel FORBUSH
and Rebecca PERRIMAN.
He was the next to sign the covenant after Mr. Ebenezer Parkman, Pastor elect, 28 Oct 1724 at Westborough Church, Westborough, MA1 {p21}.

Benjamin RICE
[QQ105, w32] (Edward2, Edmund1)

born 22 Dec 1666 at Marlborough, MA1 {p6},2 {p2},45 {p3},3 {p153},
son of Deacon Edward RICE
and Agnes BENT.
He died 23 Feb 1748/49,
(literally 1748),
aged 82y 2m at Marlborough56,1 {p23},45 {p3},3 {p384}.
He was buried at Marlborough,
in Old Common Cemetery56,3.
He made a will 31 Dec 1744,
naming sons Azariah, Zerubabel,
and Matthias; daughters Lydia Rice, Elizabeth How, Rachel How,
Priscilla Partridge and Damaris Brigham; and grandchild (of son
Simon, deceased) Ebenezer. Zerubabel Rice, Executor1 {p23}.
His will was proved 27 Mar 17491 {p23}.
He married
Mary RICE 15 Nov 1692 at Marlborough1 {6, 23},2 {p4},45 {p3},14 {p4},3 {300, 302}.
She was born 6 Aug 1669,
(listed just as the first week of August by the vital records) at Marlborough1 {p8},2 {p4},45 {p3},3 {p158},
died 22 Oct 1736,
aged 65y at Marlborough1 {p23},3 {p386},45 {p3},56,
was buried at Marlborough,
in Old Common Cemetery56,
daughter of Samuel RICE
and Mary DIX.
Note that the marriage specified by WARD is apparently in error and
that the Rice Genealogical Register line has the correct line. The
Sudbury VR lists the marriage of Benjamin Rice and Mary (Chamberlain)
Graves on 1 April 1691. This would be the Benjamin Rice born 1640 at
Sudbury. The Marlborough VR lists the marriage of Benjamin Rice and
Mary Rice on 15 Nov 1692. This would be the Benjamin Rice born 1666 at
Marlborough as shown here.

daughter of Deacon Edward RICE

She married
Capt. Samuel FORBUSH 8 Mar 1698/99 at Marlborough3,1 {p6},2 {2, 6},46 {1:201}.
He was born about 16742 {p6},
died in 1766,
"probably". However, Capt. Samuel's death is not found in
the vital records of Marlborough or Westborough. Moreover, the 1766
date is apparently just an upper bound based on the fact that his
presumed son Lt. Samuel was known as "Samuel Sr" in Westborough by 1767.
Of course, if Capt. Samuel were living elsewhere, his son could be
known as "Samuel Sr" anyhow. Thus, this upper bound is not entirely
reliable2 {p6},
son of Daniel FORBUSH
and Rebecca PERRIMAN.

It is not clear whether this Sarah really existed. There is no record of
such a marriage for Nathaniel Rice, nor of the births of any children
before 1705, nor of any deaths of such children, nor of Sarah's death,
nor any mention of such children in Nathaniel's will. It is possible
that she is merely the product of confusion with Nathaniel's son
Nathaniel, who did indeed have a first wife named Sarah. It is clear,
at least, that the references to Sarah as "Sarah Stone" by the Supplement
and the Rice Gen'l Register are the result of confusion over Ward's
description of Nathaniel being named guardian of three children of
"his wife" (without saying what wife) by a previous marriage. Those
children's surname was Stone, but they were the children of Patience
(Brown) Stone, not of the mysterious Sarah.
He married second,
Patience BROWN Dec 1704 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p24},45 {p3}.
She was born 26 Feb 1671/72,
(literally 1671) at Sudbury
(under the name Browne)11,
died 13 Nov 1722,
aged 52y at Sudbury
(under the name Rice)56,11 {p323},62,
was buried at Wayland, MA,
in North Cemetery56,62,
daughter of Thomas BROWN
and Patience FOSTER.
In January 1709 Nathaniel Rice was named guardian for three children of
his wife (Patience) by former husband Daniel Stone Jr, all under 14
years of age: Kezia Stone, Micah Stone, and Lois Stone who married
Moses Maynard of Sudbury 18 March 1723/24.
On 9 December 1726 Samuel Stone was guardian for Mary Rice, in her
19th year, and for Nathaniel Rice, in his 17th year, children of
Nathaniel Rice, deceased (Barry's History of Framingham, p. 398).1 {p25}
Nathaniel RICE and Sarah had no recorded children.

Gershom RICE
[QQ146, w41] (Thomas2, Edmund1)
,
born 9 May 1667 at Marlborough, MA1 {p7},2 {p3},3 {p155},
son of Thomas RICE
and Mary KING.
He died 19 Dec 1768,
aged 101y at Worcester, MA,
regarded as one of the "fathers of the town". He had occupied many situations
of public trust and confidence, and the first place of worship in
Worcester was at his house. According to Ward, a tribute to Gershom
appeared the following week in the Boston Gazette. In part it reads:
"Worcester, Dec. 19, 1768.-- This day died here Mr. Gershom Rice,
who completed the age of 101 years some time last May, besides
retaining his reason and understanding in a very good degree to the
last. He enjoyed a long and almost uninterrupted state of bodily
health; was able, till very lately, to travel on foot a mile or two a
day among his neighbors; eat his food with a good appetite, and
slept quietly at night without any attendance.
"He was naturally of a very pleasant disposition, very courteous in
his behavior towards all, and withal grave and serious. Of late
the decay of nature came on him fast; and he went away calmly and
quietly at last, expressing his hope and trust in his Redeemer for admission
to a better world"66,1 {p27},56,26 {26 Dec 1768}.
He was buried at Worcester,
in Old Common Cemetery66.
He resided about 1696 at Groton, CT1 {p26}.
From the Abstracts of Early Worcester Land Titles: "William Payne, of
Boston, Blacksmith, sold to Gershom Rice of Groton in the County of
New London and Colony of Connecticut, yeoman, May 26, 1712 for Fifty
pounds of good Silver current money, All the Messuage or Tenement

belonging and appertaining Situate Standing and being in Worcester in
the County of Middlesex in New England Containing Fifty acres more or
less .....
"
"Deed signed by William Payne, and Elisabeth Payne, his wife, with her
mark, in the presence of Jonas Rice and Edward Weaver, Sen., and
recorded at Charlestown Oct 19, 1713, Book 16, p. 383"67 {65-66}
According to the Abstracts of Land Records for New London and Groton, CT:
On 28 April 1704 James Morgan and Nehemiah Smith, on behalf of the

Nehemiah Smith, land at Nowayanck Neck ... recorded 8 Feb 1714, Lydia
Smith, Elizabeth Hayns, witnesses.68
as Ward cites a petition dated 13 October 1713 signed by Gershom and
Jonas "of Marlboro" as evidence that Gershom had moved back to
Marlborough by the fall of 1713. (The petition was presented to the
General Court expressing desire to enter upon a new settlement of
Worcester.) We have found no other evidence that Gershom had returned
to Marlborough in 1713. Rather, evidence suggests that Gershom may
have still been living at Groton.1 {26-27}
On 21 August 1721 Gershom Rice conveyed 103 acres of land in
Worcester to John Duncan.1 {p27}
He married
Elizabeth BALCOM.
She was born 16 Aug 1672 at Charlestown, MA
(under the name Ballcome)69 {p84},
died 16 Aug 1752 at Worcester, MA,
as shown on a gravestone cited by Ward, but apparently no longer in
existence when the comprehensive cemetery listing was published by
Franklin P. Rice1 {p27},
daughter of Henry BALCOM
and Elizabeth HAYNES.
Note that Ward erroneously reports her maiden name as "Haynes" on p. 7
but corrects the error on p. 26. Haynes was in fact the maiden name
of Elizabeth's mother.1 {7, 26}
According to the Abstracts of Early Worcester Land Titles (copied
from Middlesex County records): "Gershom Rice of Groton, Conn. and his
wife, Elizabeth, sold to her brothers, John and Joseph Balcom, of
Sudbury, November 12, 1709, for forty and Two pounds Some part in
money the other part in moveables It being part of the Portion of my
wife Elisabeth of her father Henry Balcoms Estate formerly of
Charlestown in the County of Middlesex..."67 {173-4}
A letter dated 1 April 1713 and addressed to Elizabeth Rice at
Groton, CT: from "Elizabeth Balcom to her loving daughter, Elizabeth
Rice, living in Groton." Letter also referenced grandchildren Gershom,
Jr, Elizabeth, Matthias.1 {p26}

He had 100 acres of land granted him in Worcester in 1718, of which town
he was a proprietor.1 {p28}
On 19 June 1730, after the deaths of his sons Daniel and James,
James the father was granted administration of their estates. However,
he in turn died before he could settle those estates.1 {p29}
On 23 November 1730, James' eldest son Jotham took over
administration of all three estates: father James and brothers
Daniel and James.1 {p29}

Frances RICE

(literally 1670) at Marlborough, MA3,1 {7, 29},2 {p3},
daughter of Thomas RICE
and Mary KING.
She died about 1767,
as calculated from an assertion in the Boston Gazette, cited by
Ward, that Frances lived to the age of 96. However, no record of her
death or remarriage has been found1 {p29}.
She married
Benjamin ALLEN, but there is no mention of this marriage in the vital records of Watertown,
where it presumably occurred, nor in those of Newbury or Marlborough1 {7, 29},2 {p3},45 {p3}.
He was born about 1662,
as calculated from his death records,

aged 59y at Weston, MA65 {12, 335},1 {p29},
