Patience RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Patience RICE [QQ157, w55] (Matthew2, Edmund1) , born 5 Mar 1671 at Sudbury11,1 {p7},2 {p3},45 {p4}, daughter of Matthew RICE and Martha LAMSON. She died 1 Jun 1720 at Sherborn, MA (under the name Lealand)77.

She married Ebenezer LELAND, as evidenced by a marriage agreement in which Ebenezer gave half his land to Patience, daughter of Matthew Rice of Sudbury2 {p3},45 {p4}. He was baptized 2 Jan 1657/58 at Dorchester, MA, (not found in the published records)17 {3:77}, died 30 Jun 1742 at Sherborn, MA (under the name Lealand)77,45 {p4}, son of Henry LELAND and Margaret BADCOCK. There is a long-standing confusion about the husband of Patience Rice. Two possible candidates have been named: Ebenezer and Hopestill Leland, two brothers who both lived in Sherborne and who both had wives named Patience. In his book The Rice Family, Ward said that Patience Rice married Hopestill Leland as her second husband (the record of Hopestill's marriage shows the bride's name as Patience Holbrook). Ward was silent on the subject of Ebenezer Leland. Meanwhile, Morse's History of Sherborn asserts that Ebenezer's wife was Patience Sabin while Hopestill's was Patience Holbrook. More recently, the Rice Genealogical Register and Supplement 1 to The Rice Family concluded that Patience Rice's husband was Ebenezer Leland and cite a marriage agreement between Ebenezer and Patience to substantiate the relationship. According to the Supplement, that agreement gave half of Ebenezer's land to Patience Rice, daughter of Matthew and Martha Rice. Unfortunately, the description in the Supplement is clouded by a careless error: Ebenezer's date of baptism is inserted without the "bp" notation, thus appearing to give this as the date for the marriage!

    The Sherborne and Sudbury vital records do not include any marriage of Patience Rice, nor any marriage of Ebenezer Leland to some other Patience, nor, indeed, the death of any male Holbrook in the period shortly before Hopestill Leland married Patience Holbrook. However, the Sherborne vital records do record the births of children to both Hopestill and Patience and Ebenezer and Patience. Your authors believe that Ebenezer Leland is the most likely husband and have included his family here as the family of Patience Rice. See under Hopestill Leland for the family as described by Ward.1 {p33},2 {p3},45 {p4}

Joshua RICE [QQ175, w58] (Samuel2, Edmund1) , born 19 Apr 1661 at Marlborough, MA, at Sudbury per Ward1 {8, 34},2 {p3},3 {p157}, son of Samuel RICE and Elizabeth KING. He died 23 Jun 1734, aged 73y at Marlborough1 {p34},3 {p385}. He was a proprietor of Worcester, and had 30 acres granted to him there in 1718, at which time he resided there.1 {p34} There was some delay in setting the estate of Joshua Rice as appears in the probate papers at Cambridge. Administration was granted to his son Andrew Rice 25 May 1741, "The wid. and eldest son refusing to serve." On the 29th of May, 1741, "at the desire of the guardians of chil. of Zephaniah Rice, deceased, the remaining chil. were cited to court." Estate settled 4 April 1743. The settlement mentions widow, unnamed; sons Samuel of Worcester, and Andrew; daughter Sarah; and granddaughters Mary, wife of Jacob Hemenway, and Anna, wife of Reuben Miles.1 {p35}

Edmund RICE [QQ176, w59] (Samuel2, Edmund1) , born in 1663 at Sudbury, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p8},2 {p3}, son of Samuel RICE and Elizabeth KING. He died about Sep 1726 at Westborough, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p35}. He was one of the original members of the church in 1724 at Westborough1 {p35}. He made a will 10 Aug 1726, mentioning wife Hannah, sons Seth ("the eldest now with me"), Eleazer; and daughters Dinah Brigham, Huldah Wheelock, Thankful Rice, Ruth Rice, and Anna Rice. Joshua Rice and friend Caleb Rice Executors, specific Caleb Rice not identified1 {p35}. His will was proved 12 Sep 17261 {p35}.

He married first, Ruth PARKER 15 Nov 1692 at Roxbury, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {8, 35},2 {p3},45 {p5}. She was baptized 27 Oct 1672, (illegible month) at Roxbury79, died between 1716 and 1720 at Westborough, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p35}. They resided after 1692 at Marlborough, MA, in the part that was set off in 1717 as Westborough1 {p35}.

The birth identification is uncertain. It is worth noting that, if this birth date is correct, or rather one day off, then Hannah is the same as Hannah Brewer (WRN 88).

She was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56,3. The published genealogies have consistently confused this Ruth Rice with her second cousin, the daughter of Joseph Rice. The correct identifications can be deduced from their ages at death, as shown on their gravestones.

She married first, Elisha WARD 20 Nov 1738, (28th per Ward) at Southborough, MA55,1 {41, 82}. He was born 30 Jul 1712 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p82},46 {1:43}, died 24 Jan 1756 at Southborough, MA, (at Westborough per Ward)55,1 {p82}, son of Col. William WARD and Jane. Lt Samuel Rice KING

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Lt Samuel Rice KING [QQ178, w61] (Samuel2 RICE, Edmund1) , born 14 Oct 1667 at Marlborough, MA (under the name Rice)3 {p160},1 {8, 38},2 {4, 8}, son of Samuel RICE and Elizabeth KING. He died 4 Mar 1713 at Sudbury, MA11 {p314},1 {p38},2 {p8}. He was also known as Samuel RICE1 {p38},45 {p5},14 {p4}. He was adopted when an infant, given by his father to his "brother and sister King" for their own. His mother had died when he was about two weeks old. He was adopted by Peter and Sarah King and known on Sudbury records as "Samuel King, alias Rice" Y-DNA tests in the year 2004 for descendants of Samuel Rice King prove that he was an Edmund Rice descendant1 {p38}.

He married Abigail CLAPP 30 Oct 1693 at Milton, MA, listed as Samuel of Sudbury and Abigail of Milton81,1 {8, 38},2 {4, 8},45 {p5},82 {p17}. She was born in 167517 {1:389}, died 6 Jul 1713 at Sudbury, MA (under the name King)11,1 {p38}, daughter of Ezra CLAPP and Abigail POND.

    Children of Lt Samuel Rice KING and Abigail CLAPP:

i
Ezra Rice KING, b. 1697, MA, d. 1746, Canada
ii
Peter Rice KING, b. 1701, MA, d. 1739, MA
iii
Samuel Rice KING, b. 1701, MA
iv
Thomas Rice KING, b. 1703, MA, d. 1738, MA
v
Edward Rice KING [QQ1687, w324], born 4 Aug 1705, (17 February per Ward, based on a statement on that date in 1726 that Edward was then of age) at Sudbury11,1 {p38},2 {p9},14 {p4}. On 27 January 1718/9, John Rice (WRN 23) was named guardian for five children (not named, but presumably including Edward) of Samuel King, alias Rice. However, John Rice died that September, and his son Moses (WRN 163) was named Edward's new guardian on 20 June 1720. The final account of the gaurdian was submitted on 17 February 1726[/27], after Edward came of age. One item in the account was a share in the estate of Edward's grandfather Clapp in Milton.1 {p38}
vi
Elizabeth Rice KING [QQ1895], born 29 Apr 1707, (1709 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Sudbury11,2 {p9},14 {p4}.

Married Amos BROWN. He was thinly documented. They declared their intention to marry 22 Oct 1723 at Stow, MA38.
vii
Sarah Rice KING [QQ1894], born about 1708 at Sudbury, MA, but this is purely conjectural, as the Sudbury vital records do not include it14 {p4}. There is uncertainty about the parents of Sarah King. LDS records list her parents both as Thomas King and Elizabeth Clapp of Charlemont (q.v.) and as Samuel Rice King and Abigail Clapp of Sudbury. The published vital records of Charlemont, Milton, Scituate, and Sudbury are silent about the birth of a Sarah King. The baptismal records for Sudbury begin in November 1706. We know from the published vital records of Milton and Sudbury that Samuel King alias Rice was married at Milton and lived at Sudbury. Based on proximity, Samuel and Abigail would seem more plausible than Thomas and Elizabeth to be Sarah King's parents. However, neither claim can be substantiated. Indeed, both Samuel and Abigail died rather suddenly in 1713, and their family dispersed.
viii
Mindwell Rice KING [QQ2041], born about 16 May 1709, (illegible year, but probably 1709 -- given as 1694 by Supplement 2) at Sudbury11,14 {p4}.
ix
Abigail Rice KING [QQ1684, w321], born about 1713, (1715 per Rice Gen'l Register, though her parents both died in 1713) at Sudbury1 {p38},2 {p8},14 {p4}. She died 17 Feb 1729/30 at Sudbury11 {p314},1 {p38},2 {p8},14 {p4}.

Mary RICE

Mary RICE [QQ106, w62] (Samuel2, Edmund1) , born 6 Aug 1669, (listed just as the first week of August by the vital records) at Marlborough, MA1 {p8},2 {p4},45 {p3},3 {p158}, daughter of Samuel RICE and Mary DIX. She died 22 Oct 1736, aged 65y at Marlborough1 {p23},3 {p386},45 {p3},56. She was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56. Note that the marriage specified by WARD is apparently in error and that the Rice Genealogical Register line has the correct line. The Sudbury VR lists the marriage of Benjamin Rice and Mary (Chamberlain) Graves on 1 April 1691. This would be the Benjamin Rice born 1640 at Sudbury. The Marlborough VR lists the marriage of Benjamin Rice and Mary Rice on 15 Nov 1692. This would be the Benjamin Rice born 1666 at Marlborough as shown here.

She married Benjamin RICE 15 Nov 1692 at Marlborough1 {6, 23},2 {p4},45 {p3},14 {p4},3 {300, 302}. He was born 22 Dec 1666 at Marlborough1 {p6},2 {p2},45 {p3},3 {p153}, died 23 Feb 1748/49, (literally 1748), aged 82y 2m at Marlborough56,1 {p23},45 {p3},3 {p384}, was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56,3, son of Deacon Edward RICE and Agnes BENT. He made a will 31 Dec 1744, naming sons Azariah, Zerubabel, and Matthias; daughters Lydia Rice, Elizabeth How, Rachel How, Priscilla Partridge and Damaris Brigham; and grandchild (of son Simon, deceased) Ebenezer. Zerubabel Rice, Executor1 {p23}. His will was proved 27 Mar 17491 {p23}.

Edward RICE [QQ180, w63] (Samuel2, Edmund1) , born 29 Jun 1672 at Marlborough3 {p154},1 {8, 38},2 {p4}, son of Samuel RICE and Mary DIX. He died 20 Jul 1741, (21st per gravestone), aged 68y at Marlborough3 {p384},56,1 {p38}. He was buried at Marlborough, in Spring Hill Cemetery56. He made a will 1 Jul 1741, mentioning wife Lydia; son Gideon; daughters Martha Bannister, Lydia Goodenow, Persis Goodenow, Elizabeth How; and grandsons Simeon Heywood (Howard), William Oakes, and Seth Oakes1 {p39}. His will was proved 5 Dec 17411 {p39}.

He married Lydia FAIRBANKS 25 May 1702 at Sherborn, MA77,1 {8, 38},2 {p4}. She was born 8 Mar 1683 at Sherborn (under the name Fairbank)77,1 {p38}, died 13 Sep 1755 at Marlborough, MA (under the name Rice)3 {p386},1 {p38}, daughter of Eliezer FAIRBANKS and Martha. She made a will 26 Oct 1752, mentioning daughters Martha Bannister, Persis Goodenow, and Elizabeth How; grandchildren: Lydia Woods, Mary, Zerviah, and Tabitha Goodenow; Ithamar, Levi, and Ebenezer Goodenow; William and Seth Oakes; and Esther Rice. Your authors have not found a birth record for any Lydia Woods who could be the granddaughter mentioned in the will. Indeed, since the only known granddaughter Lydia was Lydia Goodenow, it seems clear that the latter had married a Woods sometime before. At present, the only candidate is Jonathan Woods of Marlborough and possibly later of New Braintree1 {p39}. Her will was proved 1 Dec 17551 {p39}. They resided at Marlborough1 {p38}.
