Capt Nathan BRIGHAM
[QQ1909, w79] (Mary3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1)
,
born 17 Jun 1671 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {11, 44},45 {p1},46 {1:49},
son of Thomas BRIGHAM
and Mary RICE.
He died 16 Feb 1746/47,
aged 75y 8m at Marlborough1 {p44},3 {p349}.
Your authors note that no marriage for this Nathan Brigham is
found in the Marlborough vital records. Thus, the identification of
his wife Elizabeth depends on indirect evidence. Her recorded age
at death is sufficient: it matches exactly the recorded birth of
Elizabeth Maynard and is fully nine years off from the birth of
Elizabeth How. It is, of course, conceivable that Nathan married
two different Elizabeths in succession, although, in that case, we
would have not just one, but three, unrecorded events to explain
(the two marriages and the death of the first wife). If that is
indeed the case, then the first wife (Elizabeth How) might well
be the mother of Nathan's children. Investigation of the How
and Maynard probate records may shed light on this question.
He married first,
Elizabeth MAYNARD about 1690,
(1664 per Supplement, but that is actually Elizabeth's birth date) at Marlborough,
(not found in the published records)45 {p6}.
She was born 2 Apr 1664 at Marlborough
(under the name Mainord)3,46 {1:48},
died 29 Mar 1733,
aged 69 years less four days at Marlborough
(under the name Brigham)3 {p347},1 {p44},
daughter of John MAYNARD
and Mary GATES.
He married second,
Elizabeth HOW, but this marriage is undocumented, despite Ward's implication that this
was Nathan's first and only marriage. It may not have happened at all1 {p44}.
She was born 25 May 1673 at Marlborough3,
daughter of Isaac HOW
and Frances WOODS.
Capt Nathan BRIGHAM and Elizabeth HOW resided at Marlborough1 {p44}.

,
born 7 Mar 1683 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},46 {1:49},
son of Thomas BRIGHAM
and Mary RICE.
He died Oct 1758 at Coventry, CT2 {p15}.
He married
Bethiah WARD 27 Jun 1705 at Marlborough, MA,
(Elnathan's name is damaged in the original
church record, and the published record lists him as (Jo)nathan -
it also gives the date as June 17)3,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},46 {1:202}.
She was born about 1686 in probably Massachusetts,
died 15 Apr 1765 at Coventry, CT2 {p15}.
She was presumably the daughter either of Samuel and Sarah Ward (q.v.)
or of William and Hannah Ward (q.v.). Both couples had daughters
named Bethiah around 1682. Examination of the probate records
for Samuel Ward may settle the issue.17 {4:414-15}

She married
Jonas HOUGHTON 30 Jun 1710 at Marlborough1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},3 {p231}.
He was born 2 Sep 1682,
(July per Rice Gen'l Register, but actually 7th month) in Massachusetts22 {79:398},2 {p15},
died 15 Aug 1739,
aged 56y at probably Lancaster, MA,
(at Bolton per Rice Gen'l Register)56,53 {p412},2 {p15},
was buried at Old Common Burial Ground, Lancaster, MA56,
son of Jonas HOUGHTON
and Mary BURBEANE.
He was possibly born in Marlborough while the Lancastrians were

left Jonas behind.48

this first wife was indeed born on that date, then there was only one
