(not found in the published records)45 {p11}.
Administration on his estate was granted 24 Dec 1771,
to son Jonas Rice at the request of the widow Thankful. Her thirds were
set off 12 March 17731 {p67}.
He married first,
Sarah DUNTON 11 Nov 1731 at Weston, MA,
both of Sudbury. This same marriage, with the same bride, is also
attributed by Ward to another John Rice (WRN 155), evidently in error65 {p28},1 {25, 67},45 {3, 11},11 {190, 259},62.
She died 16 Jan 1738/39 at Sudbury, MA
(under the name Rice)1 {p67},11 {p323}.
There has been some question about the name of John Rice's wife. The

Dunton and that the mother of John's child was Sarah.

Hannah RICE
[QQ200066, w238] (Ephraim3, Thomas2, Edmund1)
,
born 31 Jul 1713 at Sudbury11,1 {p25},45 {p3},
daughter of Ephraim RICE
and Hannah LIVERMORE.
She died before 20 Feb 178488 {p28}.
She made a will 21 Mar 1783 at Sudbury,
mentioning her son John Barber's widow Abigail, children of her deceased
daughter Abigail Loker, her daughter Hannah Loker, and her sons Samuel,
Oliver, Nathan, Ephraim, and Silas Barber22 {27:281}.
Her heirs made an agreement in 1786 to dispose of the property she had
left them (a house and four acres in Sudbury). The agreement was signed
by Ephraim Barber on the one hand and by Nathan, Oliver and Silas Barber,
Henry Locar with his wife Hannah, Moses Locar, Benjamin Mills with his
wife Sarah, and Jeremiah Smith with his wife Mary.22 {27:281}
Although the Sudbury vital records show only one marriage of a Hannah
Rice to a John Barber, Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, ascribes that
marriage to two different Hannahs of about the same age, daughters of
Ephraim and Phineas, respectively. Ward gives the nod to Phineas'
daughter. However, Ephraim Rice remained at Sudbury while Phineas Rice
moved to Stow when both Hannahs were still teenagers. Compelling
evidence that Hannah was the daughter of Ephraim is supplied by a
letter written by John Barber on 11 July 1755, while at a military
camp, to his wife Hannah in Sudbury (see NEHGR 27:286). In the
letter, he reports that Isaac Rice is in the same camp with him and is
well. Significantly, the end of the letter indicates it was actually
sent (for transmittal to Barber's wife) to Gershom Rice, in Sudbury,
New-England. Gershom and Isaac Rice, sons of Ephraim, would have been
Hannah's brothers. Therefore, your authors must conclude that the
Hannah Rice who married John Barber was Hannah (WRN 238), daughter of
Ephraim Rice.22 {27:286}
She married first,
John BARBER 20 Oct 1735,
(23rd per county records) at Sudbury,
listed as John of Medfield1 {25, 43},2 {39, 335},45 {3, 5},11 {166, 258}.
He was born 27 Aug 1708 at Medfield, MA88 {p17},51 {p19},125 {p314},
died before 14 Jun 1755126,
son of Deacon George BARBOUR
and Anna TAYLOR.
He resided after 1739 at Sudbury, MA88 {p28}.
She married second,
Deacon Adams STONE 26 Jan 1762 at Sudbury11,88 {p28}.
He was born about 1690127 {p83},
son of Matthew STONE
and Rachel POND.
He made a will 1 Jun 1770 at Sudbury,
mentioning wife Hannah (in accord with a prenuptial agreement), daughters
Bathsheba How and Elizabeth Rice, son Isaac Stone, son Benjamin's daughter
Lucy Hemingway, underage grandsons Adam and Benjamin Stone, and
grandson Adam How, all living children being the three mentioned above.
Executor to be son-in-law Ezekiel How of Sudbury. Witnessed by David How,
David Stone Jr, and Joel Stone20 {docket 21535}.
His will was proved 30 Jun 1772 in Middlesex County, MA,
the will having been accepted by the heirs in a statement signed by
Hannah Stone, Nathaniel Rice, and Elizabeth Rice20 {docket 21535}.
She married third,
Israel STEVENS before 1 Sep 1770,
Israel of Grafton1 {p43},2 {39, 335},88 {p28}.
He was thinly documented.
