Deacon Edmund RICE
[QQ1, w1],
born about 1594 in England,
but no record of his birth or baptism has been found1 {p5}.
He died 3 May 1663 at Sudbury, MA,
(not found in the published records)1 {p5},2 {p1}.
He was buried May 1663 at Sudbury (Wayland), MA,
according to the Marlborough (sic) vital records, but the precise location
is unknown. One possible grave site is marked by a monument designed by
Arthur Wallace Rice of Boston, MA. It was dedicated by the Edmund Rice
Association on 29 August 1914. A boulder with a bronze tablet was also
erected by the Association to mark Edmund's homestead site on
the Old Connecticut Path in Wayland3,2 {p1}.
In 1638 Edmund Rice acquired 4 acres in the part of Sudbury that is now
Wayland and laid out the plot in the fall of that year. He was one of
the first to build in the area. According to Massachusetts Colonial
Records, Volume 1, page 271, on 4 September 1639 Edmund Rice was one
of the committee appointed by the Massachusetts General Court to lay out
the land in Sudbury.
Edmund Rice's house was situated on the "Old North Street",
near Mill brook. He received his proportion of meadowlands, which
were divided "to the present inhabitants" under dates of 4 September
1639, 20 April, and 18 November 164-, his share being 42 1/2 acres. He
shared in all the division of uplands and commons - the total number
of acres which fell to his lot, as an original inhabitant, was 247.4 {680, 681},5 {1:271}
He was a Selectman in 1639, 1643, 1644, and subsequent years; a Deacon
of the church in 1648, and, in 1656, one of the petitioners for a new
plantation that became known as Marlborough.1 {p1},6 {book 1}
He was designated a Freeman 13 May 1640 in Massachusetts7,5 {1:377}.
He was a deputy to the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony
(the Massachusetts legislature) representing the Town of Sudbury,
serving in 1640, 1652, 1653, and 1654.5 {1:301, 3:259, 3:297, 3:340}
He was appointed by the General Court to decide small cases in the town
of Sudbury in the years 1641, 1646, and 16485 {1:328, 3:66, 3:130}.
He resided after 1656 at Marlborough, MA,
on "The Great Road" on the northerly side of the pond
(Cochituate Pond), not far from Williams Tavern. The pond is
also spelled Wachittuate, Caochituet, Chochichawicke,
Coijchawicke, Catchchauitt, Charchittawick, Katchetuit,
Cochichawauke, or Cochichowicke1 {p2}.
Twice in the 20th century nationally recognized research
genealogists have attempted to determine the parents and
ancestors of Edmund Rice. Mary Lovering Holman described the
negative result of her search for records in the parishes near
Stanstead and Sudbury, Suffolk County, England in "English
Notes on Edmund Rice", The American Genealogist, Volume 10
(1933/34), pp. 133 - 137. Mrs Holman is considered by many to
be one of the best research genealogists in the 20th century.
In 1997 the Edmund Rice (1638) Association commissioned Dr.
Joanna Martin, a nationally recognized research genealogist who
lives in Hitcham, Suffolk, England, only a few miles from
Stanstead and Sudbury, to search again for records of Edmund
Rice's parents. Dr. Martin reported in 1999 that she found no
record that identified Edmund's parents or ancestral line.
Several authors of published works and computer data sets have
claimed names for Edmund Rice's parents. Regrettably they have
not given sources that would assist in definitive genealogical
research. For example, the Ancestral File and International
Genealogical Index, two popular computer data sets widely
distributed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,
offer parent candidates that include: Henry Rice and Margaret
Baker, Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, Thomas Rice and
Catherine Howard, and Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost.
From Mrs. Holman's paper we have an authoritative record of one
Henry Rice's marriage to Elizabeth Frost in November 1605 at
Stanstead. Mrs. Holman also documents the baptism of Edmund's
first child on 23 August 1619 at Stanstead. If this is the
Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost to which the LDS records refer,
the LDS records must be erroneous. Our researchers have not
been able to find records that support any Henry Rice and
Elizabeth Frost, Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Thomas Rice and
Catherine Howard, or Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost as parents
of Edmund Rice.
A scholarly investigation by Donald Lines Jacobus, considered
by many as the dean of modern American genealogy, appeared in
The American Genealogist, volume 11, (1936), pp. 14-21 and was
reprinted in the fall of 1968 and the winter of 1998 issues of
Newsletter of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Jacobus
traced many of the false accounts to the book by Dr. Charles
Elmer Rice entitled "By the Name of Rice", privately published
by Dr. Rice at Alliance, Ohio in 1911.
Sudbury, England includes three parishes, two of which do not
have complete records for the years near 1594, which is
Edmund's most likely birth year. Edmund Rice deposed in a court
document on 3 April 1656 that he was about 62 years old. Thus,
if he had been born in Sudbury, his records have been lost and we
may never know his origin.
In his address to the 1999 annual meeting of the Edmund Rice
(1638) Association, Gary Boyd Roberts, Senior Researcher, New
England Historic Genealogical Society, reviewed all of the
genealogical sleuthing on Edmund's parentage. Mr. Roberts is
well known for his research on royal lineage. He concluded that
there was no evidence whatsoever that supports the published
accounts of Edmund Rice's parents and no evidence that Edmund
Rice was from a royal lineage.
The Edmund Rice (1638) Association is very interested in
proving the ancestry of Edmund Rice. The association encourages
anyone who can identify a primary source that names Edmund and
his parents to come forward. Records of a baptism,
estate probate, or land transaction naming Edmund and his
parents are the most likely records to contain that proof.
Until someone can cite such a record, the association must
state emphatically that Edmund Rice's parents and ancestry are
not known and that Edmund Rice's descendants can not claim
royal ancestry.8 {10:133},8 {11:14},8 {15:227}
Note that two of the children ascribed to Edmund Rice by Ward did not exist.
The supposed Edmund Jr was based on a probate record for an Edmund Rice
of Sudbury in 1714, five decades after the deacon's death and therefore
seemingly referring to some other Edmund. However, Ward himself admits
that no other evidence had ever been found for the existence of this
other Edmund, and close examination of the probate details indicates that
it was Deacon Edmund after all. The daughter Ann Rice, supposedly born in
1661, was actually a granddaughter born to Edmund's son Edward.1 {5, 6, 9},2 {p9}
He married first,
Thomasine FROST 15 Oct 1618 at Saint Marys Church, Bury Saint Edmunds, co Suffolk, England2 {p1},8 {61:166},9.
She was baptized 10 Aug 1600,
(11th per Rice Gen'l Register) at Saint James Church, Stanstead, co Suffolk, England10,2 {p1},8 {63:134},8 {10:135},8 {61:165-166},
died 13 Jun 1654 at Sudbury, MA
(under the name Rice)2 {p1},11 {p323},
daughter of Edward FROST
and Thomasine BELGRAVE.
Deacon Edmund RICE and Thomasine FROST resided in 1627 at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England8 {10:133}.
He married second,
Mercy 1 Mar 1655/56,
(literally 1655) at Sudbury, MA,
registered as Mary Brigham11 {p258},2 {p1}.
She was born about 1618 in England2 {p1},
died 22 Dec 1693 at Marlborough, MA
(under the name Hunt)3,2 {p1}.
The probate file of Thomas Brigham confirms that his widow Mercy was
married to Edmund Rice by 1656.12
The 1656 marriage record apparently gives her name as Mary, while
the Brigham probate records call her both Mary and Mercy. However,
it should be noted that "Marcy" is often misread as "Mary."
As Mercy Hunt, she sued Robert Wilson in 1673 for debts owed to
the estate of "Edmund Rice sometime her husband."12
It is now popular to give Mercy's maiden name as "Hurd", following the
1907 Brigham genealogy, which in turn quoted Abner Morse reporting a
half-century earlier that such was the "family tradition". However,
Andrew H. Ward, a contemporary of Morse, reported in his Rice
genealogy that "Hunt" was the tradition. Neither authority cited any
evidence besides the apparently equivocal tradition, nor has any
evidence surfaced since then. Given that "Hunt" was her third
husband's name, it seems plausible that the supposed tradition was
nothing more than confusion on the part of a 19th-century family
historian. We therefore choose to leave the maiden name blank until
such time as cogent evidence appears.1 {p3}

Henry RICE
[QQ48, w2] (Edmund1)
,
born about 1620,
calling himself about 50 years old on January 25, 1667,
in a deposition at court, but we must presume he was rounding his age up1 {p5},2 {p1},
baptized 13 Feb 1620/21 at Stanstead, co Suffolk, England2 {p1},14 {p1},8 {10:134},15 {p71},9,
son of Deacon Edmund RICE
and Thomasine FROST.
He died 10 Feb 1710/11 at Framingham, MA16,1 {p5},2 {p2}.
He swore an oath of fidelity at Sudbury, MA on 9 July 1645.1 {p5},17
He was designated a Freeman 10 May 1648 in Massachusetts7,17 {3:529}.
He received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile Grant in 1655.18
He was one of the thirteen Sudbury petitioners for the grant of
Marlborough in 1656.19 {p27}
He received 50 acres in 1659 at Rice's End (Framingham) from his father
and built a house there.4
He made a deposition 25 Jan 1667,
aged 50y (sic) in Middlesex County, MA1 {p5}.
He was an original member of the church in Framingham in 17014.
He made a will 3 Oct 1705,
mentioning sons Jonathan and
David; daughters Elizabeth Brewer, Hannah Taylor, Abigail
Smith, Tamasin Parmenter, Rachel Drury, Lydia Wheelock, Mercy
Allen; and granddaughter Mary Brigham1 {p5}.
His will was proved 28 Feb 1710/11 in Middlesex County,
inventory £527.11.01 {p5},20 {docket 18712}.
He married
Elizabeth MOORE 1 Jan 1643/44,
(February per Ward) at Sudbury, MA1 {p5},2 {1, 2},14 {p1},11 {p258}.
She was born about 162814 {p1},
died 23 Aug 1705,
(3rd per Ward) at Framingham, MA

Deacon Edward RICE
[QQ57, w3] (Edmund1)
,
born about 1622,
(1619 per Ward)1 {p6},
baptized 27 Oct 1622,
(26th per TAG, 20th per Rice Gen'l Register) at Stanstead, co Suffolk, England,
listed as Edmund Ryce. However, we are convinced that Edward was the
child baptized (and born) that year, and that he exaggerated his
age in later life9,13 {73#4:17},8 {10:134},2 {1, 2},
son of Deacon Edmund RICE
and Thomasine FROST.
He died 15 Aug 1712,
aged about 93 at Marlborough, MA3 {p384},1 {p6}.
He received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile Grant in 1655.18
He resided in 1664 at Marlborough1 {p5}.
He made a deposition 2 Oct 1666,
aged 47y (sic) at Middlesex County Court, Cambridge, MA21.
He was elected deacon in 1687.19 {p285}
He was assessed 8s 7d in the 1688 Marlborough tax roll.22 {36:191}
He made a court deposition in 1692,
aged 70y in Middlesex County, MA8 {10:135}.
A 1712 obituary in the Boston News Letter gave the death year as 1711 and
said he had been born in Berkhamstead in 1618. It also said he had 142
descendants at that time, of which 119 were living. It further said
that Edward's brother Henry, who had died in Framingham in 1711, had a
similarly large number of descendants.12
He married
Agnes BENT about 16471 {p6},2 {1, 2},23 {p15}.
She was born about 16312 {p2},23 {p14},
died 4 Jun 1713,
aged 83y at Marlborough, MA,
registered as Ann Rice1 {p6},2 {p2},3 {p384},
daughter of John BENT
and Martha.
She was also known as Ann.
Barry's History of Framingham states Agnes Bent was without
issue, which is clearly wrong. The will of John Bent of 1672 makes
provision specifically for his daughter Agnes Rice and her son
John Rice, which not only shows she was still living at that time,
but also proves she was indeed the wife of Edward Rice (there being
only one John Rice available as a grandson of John Bent).
The confusion stems from the fact that the birth records of her
children and the record of her death all show her name as
Ann (a common variant of Agnes in her time).
On 1 April 1686 at Sudbury, MA, Edward and Agnes Rice gave to their
son Edmund Rice of Sudbury, half of the farm lying within the bounds
of Sudbury, "near the spring". (Edward had purchased some of this land
from his father Edmund and some of the land from his brother
Benjamin. John Rice of Sudbury, a brother of Edmund, had the choice
half.) Deed recorded 16 August 1734.1 {p6},24

[QQ138, w4] (Edmund1)
,
baptized 26 Jan 1625/26 at Stanstead, co Suffolk, England8 {10:134},
son of Deacon Edmund RICE
and Thomasine FROST.
He died 16 Nov 1681 at Sudbury, MA,
(at Marlborough per Ward)11,1 {p6},2 {p2}.
Thomas was a proprietor of the town of Marlborough and settled
there in 1664.19 {p432}
He made a will 11 Nov 1681 at Marlborough, MA,
giving to sons Thomas, Peter, Nathaniel and
Ephraim, residue to wife Mary, and at her decease to go to "the
younger children Rice, and Peter King to be overseer of my
will"1 {p7}.
His will was proved 4 Apr 1682 in Middlesex County, MA1 {p7}.
The Boston Gazette of 26 December 1768 discusses the longevity of
Thomas' children, but the article contains errors. See also a follow-up
in the Middlesex News Extra, Jun 8-14, 1984.25,26
He married
Mary KING in 1651 at Sudbury, MA,
(not found in the published records)1 {5-7},2 {p1},14 {p1}.
She was born in 1630 at Shaston, Dorsetshire, England27 {55, 56},28,
died 22 Mar 1714/15 at Sudbury, MA
(under the name Rice)11,2 {p2},27 {55, 56},
daughter of Thomas KING
and Anne COLLINS.
She made a will 10 May 1710,
(8 Ann) at Marlborough, MA,
mentioning sons Thomas of Marlboro, Peter, Nathaniel, Ephraim, Gershom,
James, Jonas and Elisha; daughters Mary White, Sarah Adams, Frances
Allen and Grace Moore1 {p7}.

Lydia RICE
[QQ154, w8] (Edmund1)
,
born about 1627 at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England19 {p431},
daughter of Deacon Edmund RICE
and Thomasine FROST.
She died 5 Apr 1675,
aged 47y at Boston, MA
(under the name Drury)29 {p745},1 {p9},2 {p4},30,19 {p431}.
She was buried at Boston,
in Kings Chapel Cemetery,
and her stone (with husband, Hugh Drury) still stands, but Hugh's half of
the stone is almost gone29 {p745}.
(See notes on the other Lydia from the Genealogical Register of Edmund
Rice Descendants.)
She married
Lieutenant Hugh DRURY, though the marriage is not found in the vital records
of Sudbury or Boston1 {5, 9, 223},2 {1, 4}.
He was born about 1616,
(on 26 January 1674 at Superior Court he gave his age as 57)2 {p4},31,
died 6 Jul 1689 at Boston2 {p4},30,32 {p222},
was buried at Boston,
in Kings Chapel Cemetery,
and his stone (with wife, Lydia) is still there, but the inscription
with his name was no longer legible in 200029 {p745},32 {p222}.
Although numerous secondary sources list Hugh Drury as born c 1616 in
London, England, and Hugh's father as Obed Drury, we have found no
evidence to support Hugh Drury's birth or parents. Until we find
compelling evidence, we will not list his birth place as London or his
father as Obed Drury.
He became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1659
and was subsequently its Lieutenant.1 {p9}
Your authors note that Savage says Hugh had a son Thomas, but
Thomas was actually a grandson, son of Hugh's only known son John.

Samuel RICE
[QQ171, w6] (Edmund1)
,
baptized 12 Nov 1634 at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England1 {p11},2 {1, 3},8 {10:136},
son of Deacon Edmund RICE
and Thomasine FROST.
He died 25 Feb 1684/85,
(literally 1684) at Marlborough, MA3,2 {p3}.
In testimony of court files at Cambridge, MA, on 2 May 1666, Samuel
Rice stated that he was 32 years old.1 {p7}
He made a will 10 Feb 1684 at Marlborough,
mentioning wife Sarah; sons Joshua and
Edmund; daughters Elizabeth Haynes, Hannah Hubbard, and Esther
Hubbard; "my son Samuel Rice, whom I have given to brother and
sister King for their own"; sons Edward and Joseph; and two
daughters Mary and Abigail Rice, under 18. Brothers Edward and Joseph
Rice were named overseers1 {p8}.
His will was proved 7 Apr 1685 in Middlesex County, MA,
inventory £349.2.61 {p8},20 {docket 18798}.
He married first,
Elizabeth KING 8 Nov 1655 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p7},2 {1, 3}.
She died about 1667
(under the name Rice),
at Sudbury according to Ward3,1 {p7},22 {130:302},
was buried 30 Oct 1667 at Marlborough, MA2 {p3},3 {p384},
daughter of Thomas KING
and Anne COLLINS.
Samuel RICE and Elizabeth KING resided about 1661 at Marlborough3 {p157}.
He married second,
Mary DIX Sep 1668 at Sudbury, MA,
(not found in the published records)1 {p8},2 {1, 3}.
She was born 2 May 1639,
(literally 3rd month) at Watertown, MA
(under the name Dikes)34 {1:7},2 {p3},
died 18 Jun 1675,
(1678 per county records, apparently in error) at Marlborough, MA,
(at Concord per Rice Gen'l Register)
(under the name Rice)2 {p3},3 {p386},19 {p432},
daughter of Edward DIX
and Jane.
The births of all three children of Samuel and Mary Rice are also
entered in the Marlborough vital records under Samuel and his
first wife Elizabeth.3
He married third,
Sarah WHITE 13 Dec 1676 at Concord, MA35 {p19},2 {1, 3},19 {p432}.
She was baptized 9 Apr 1643,
(literally 2nd month) at 1st Church, Salem, MA36,2 {p3},
died in 1711 at Woodstock, CT2 {p3},
daughter of John WHITE
and Joane WEST.
Samuel Rice's second wife is entered in the Marlborough VR as
having died 18 June 1678. Therefore, either that death date or this
marriage date is undoubtedly wrong. Your authors believe the
marriage date to be correct.

He died 23 Dec 1711,
aged 76y at Stow, MA38,2 {p4}.
He was buried at Stow,
in Old Cemetery38.
He resided in 1675 at Marlborough, MA,
(his house was one of the garrisons set up in Marlborough during King
Philip's War)22 {40:315}.
He resided between 1677 and 1681 at Watertown, MA.
He was chosen one of the tithingmen in Watertown in 1680.39
He married first,
Mercy KING 4 May 1658 at Sudbury, MA,
but there is some uncertainty about whether Mercy King died soon
after her marriage to Joseph or whether she is the Martha Rice,
wife of Joseph, who appears in the Marlborough vital records as
having died on 4 January 1668. Ward lists both Mercy King and
Martha (?) as wives of Joseph. The Rice Genealogical Register
lists only wife Mercy King and takes the death record on 4
January 1668 to be that of Mercy King. There is no
mention of a marriage between Joseph Rice and Martha (Eames)
in the Sudbury vital records. On the other hand, the birth records
of Joseph's first four children all list the mother as
Martha1 {p8},2 {1, 3, 4},11 {227, 259}.
She was born 26 Feb 1638/3921,
was baptized 10 Mar 1638/39 at Shaftesbury, co Dorset, England,
listed as Martha10,
died 4 Jan 1668/69,

She was also known as Martha RICE3 {p386},11 {p123}.
He married second,
Mary BEERS in 16702 {1, 4},33 {p620}.
She was born 10 Mar 1642/43,

He was assigned a house lot of 24 acres in 1660 at Marlborough, MA19 {p37}.
On 29 September 1673 at Sudbury, MA, farm land was sold by written
contract, naming Benjamin and Mary (Brown) Rice as the sellers of
land given to them by their parents. Edmund Rice and William Brown(e),
were named as the father and father-in-law of Benjamin Rice. The buyer
was John Death.21 {p1}
Benjamin Rice sued Dr. William Avery, of Boston, for malpractice. Verdict
for defendant on 23 May 1685.1 {p10}
He married first,
Mary BROWNE 2 Jun 1661 at Sudbury, MA,
(not found in the published records)1 {p10},2 {p4}.
She was born 18 May 1643,
(listed as the 28th in a secondary copy of the vital records) at Sudbury11 {p28},2 {p4},
died 3 Jan 1690/91 at Sudbury
(under the name Rice)11 {p323},2 {p4},
daughter of William BROWNE
and Mary BISBY.
He married second,
Mary CHAMBERLAIN 1 Apr 1691 at Sudbury
(under the name Graves)1 {6, 23},2 {p4},14 {p4},11 {207, 257}.
She was born 30 Jan 1648/49,
(it has also been guessed that she was born c1645, possibly in Sudbury,
but the Sudbury candidate's father, Richard Chamberlain, mentioned a
daughter Mary Smith in his will of 1673, not Mary Graves) at Woburn, MA41,2 {p4},17 {1:354},19 {p433}.
Your authors note that there is widespread confusion over the
identities of the two Marys who married two Benjamin Rices (WRN 10)
and (WRN 32). The marriage records give only the names and
dates, with no additional details, so the identification must rest
on circumstantial evidence. To begin, we have the two marriages:
1691 in Sudbury to Mary Graves and 1692 in Marlborough to Mary Rice.
Almost exactly nine months after the Marlborough marriage, a child
was born at Marlborough to Benjamin and Mary, and there is a
gravestone at the Old Common cemetery in Marlborough for a Mary,
wife of Benjamin Rice, with a reported age that indicates her
birth to be about 1671 (consistent with the observation that the
Marlborough couple had nine children at regular intervals starting
in 1693). There are no births recorded in Sudbury for children
of Benjamin and Mary there. We believe these facts provide a
convincing case for the identifications presented here: the
Sudbury couple were middle-aged widower Benjamin Rice and middle-aged
widow Mary (Chamberlain) Graves, both of Sudbury, (rather than young
Benjamin Rice of Marlborough and Mary Graves, daughter of Benjamin
Graves of Concord), and the Marlborough couple were young Benjamin
Rice and young Mary Rice, both of Marlborough. There is an
unexplained discrepancy of two years between the recorded birth of
Mary Rice (WRN 62) and the gravestone-indicated birth of the wife
of Benjamin of Marlborough, but such discrepancies are relatively
common (and Mary Graves of Concord is no improvement).

wife of President John Adams, was a descendant of Thomas and
Abigail (Rice) Smith. These claims are unfounded.
