Deacon Joseph STEVENS about 17052 {p24},45 {p2}.
He was born in 1683 at probably Lancaster, MA,
but it is not known where Nourse got this information, other than "from
sources supposed reliable." It is evident that the Stevens family
took refuge in Boston during King Philip's War, as that is where
Joseph's older brother Simon was born in 1678, but they had very
likely returned to Lancaster by 16832 {p24},53 {p452},

Capt. Moses RICE
[QQ22, w163] (John3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 27 Oct 1694 at Sudbury1 {p17},11 {p193},
son of John RICE
and Tabitha STONE.
He died 11 Jun 1755 at Charlemont, MA,
killed by Indians105.
He was buried at Charlemont,
in Station Cemetery105.
Moses Rice was named guardian of "Edward King, alias Rice" (WRN 324)
on 20 June 1720, to replace John Rice (WRN 23), who had died the
previous September. Moses, then of Worcester, submitted his final
report as guardian on 17 February 1726/7, after Edward came of age.1 {p38}
He resided about 1722 at Worcester, MA,
opening a public house on the site of one afterwards kept by
Capt. Ephraim Mower, and on which was subsequently erected the
"United States Hotel"1 {p50}.
In 1724, Moses Rice was posted to Rutland for garrison duty with
others from Worcester under the command of Capt. Samuel Wright of
Rutland. Moses later became captain of a company of cavalry while he
resided at Worcester.1 {p50}
He resided 13 Apr 1737 at Worcester,
when he conveyed a sawmill at Longmeadow Falls (in Rutland) to his
future son-in-law James Heaton of that town1 {p50}.
He resided 9 May 1742 at Rutland, MA,
where he, Eleazer Ball, and Daniel Estabrook were chosen
to provide for the ordination of Joseph Buckminster1 {p50}.
On 23 April 1743, he purchased 2200 acres of land in what later
became Charlemont. It is not known when he settled there.1 {p50}
He collected a great amount of historical matter, comprising an
account of many interesting events of which he had been a
witness, and in some of which he had borne a conspicuous and in
others, a hazardous part. His manuscripts were destroyed by
fire.1 {p51}
He is said to have been the first town clerk of Charlemont, but, since
the town was not incorporated until ten years after his death, the
post would have been that of Proprietor's clerk.
In any case, he was the chief promoter of the town and one of its
first settlers.1 {p50}
While plowing in the fields one day, Moses was shot and wounded by
Indians lying in ambush. They also shot and killed another man,
named Phineas Arms, at the same time and captured Moses' eight-year-old
grandson Asa, who had been riding the plow horse. Moses was taken
to the adjoining woods, scalped, and left for dead, but Asa was
carried off to Canada.1 {p50}
He married
Sarah KING 16 Nov 1719 at Sudbury, MA1 {17, 50},45 {p8},11 {228, 260}.
She died about 1788,
at the home of her son Aaron (death not found in the Charlemont
vital records)1 {p51},
daughter of Thomas KING
and Elizabeth CLAPP.
There is uncertainty about the parents of Sarah King. LDS records list
her parents both as Thomas King and Elizabeth Clapp of Charlemont
(q.v.) and as Samuel Rice King and Abigail Clapp of Sudbury (q.v.).
The published vital records of Charlemont, Milton, Scituate, and
Sudbury are silent about the birth of a Sarah King. The baptismal
records for Sudbury begin in November 1706. We know from the published
vital records of Milton and Sudbury that Samuel King alias Rice was
married at Milton and lived at Sudbury. Based on proximity, Samuel and
Abigail would seem more plausible than Thomas and Elizabeth to be
Sarah King's parents. However, neither claim can be substantiated.

Deborah RICE
[QQ1512, w177] (Daniel3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 14 Nov 1697 at Marlborough, MA1 {p20},2 {p25},45 {p2},3 {p153},
daughter of Daniel RICE
and Bethia WARD.
She died 1 Dec 1725 at Marlborough
(under the name Brown)1 {p20},2 {p25},3 {p351}.
There is a conflict in the marriage of Deborah
Rice and James Brown. Ward lists Deborah's parents as Daniel Rice
and Bethia Ward. Supplement 1 lists them as Peter Rice and Rebecca
How. Since there is only one marriage record for one James Brown,
only one of these descriptions can be correct. Regrettably, the
Marlborough vital records do not include a death or marriage record
for the second Deborah Rice. Further, Deborah (Rice) Brown died
before either presumed father died, and so a will would be no help.
She married
James BROWN 26 Jan 1724/25 at Marlborough3,1 {p20},2 {p25},45 {p2}.
He was thinly documented.
