daughter of Thomas RICE

She died 25 Dec 1769,
aged 81y at Westborough, MA

died 13 Feb 1763,
aged 87y at Westborough, MA57,2 {p27},

The town of Westborough was formed in 1717 from Marlborough so it is
likely that James did not move, although his children's births are
recorded in different towns. Mary's birth is recorded at both, shortly
before the separation of the two towns.112

born 6 Jul 1694 at Marlborough3,1 {p23},
son of Thomas RICE

He died 20 Aug 1773 at Spencer, MA1 {p61},113 {p264}.
He was captured by Indians during a raid on the portion of Marlborough now
Westborough. Ashur (WRN 209), Adonijah (WRN 210), and cousins
Silas (WRN 309) and Timothy (WRN 310) were all taken by the Indians to
Canada. Adonijah remained there; it may have been his daughter

after some years, was redeemed by his father, and returned to
Westborough. The raid took place 8 Aug 1704 at Marlborough, MA1 {p61}.

Beriah RICE
[QQ99, w213] (Anna3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 20 Aug 1702 at Marlborough (Westborough), MA3,1 {p24},45 {p10},
son of Thomas RICE
and Anna RICE.
He died before 27 Jun 1764,
when his will was recorded. Beriah may have been visiting son Stephen
or Benjamin in Massachusetts when his will was written and at the time
of his death.
Judge Savary presents the List of Names of Confirmation
of the Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765. Both Beriah
and Beriah, Junr are listed. Paul Haseltine is also listed although we
have good evidence that by late 1765 Paul was founding a new town in
what is now the state of Vermont. We may assume that the town fathers
padded the list of names as Beriah Sr was dead and Paul Heseltine was
living in Vermont by that time116 {#5},117 {p105}.
Ward reports that Beriah Rice moved in 1748 to Annapolis, NS. We now
know that the year was 1760.1 {p62}
Beriah Rice left Boston on 23 May 1760 on the ship Charming Molly and
arrived at Annapolis, Nova Scotia, on 25 June 1760. He had with him two
oxen and two cows. The passenger list shows three Rice males: Benjamin,
Stephen, and Beriah, but perhaps both Beriah and his namesake son, as
well as the two other sons named on the list, all traveled together.
Then again, perhaps only one Beriah (but which one?) went on this
voyage.118 {150, 151}
He made a will 15 Jun 1763 at Worcester, MA,
which was recorded 27 Jun 1764 at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The
will cited his wife Marcy (sic), eldest son Judah, second son Asaph,
third son Timothy, younger sons Beriah, Benjamin, Joseph, and Stephen,
eldest daughter Marcy (sic) wife of Paul Hareltine (sic), second
daughter Lucy, third daughter Rachael, and fourth daughter
Sarah. Beriah left to his wife Marcy one half right to his farm "on
the east side of the creek known as Bloody Bridge Creek (Annapolis,
NS)..." for the space of six years "but at the expiration of said term
the above mentioned half right (to the) farm shall be to son Timothy's
hereafter ...". Beriah left the other half of his land and farm
dwelling on the east side of Bloody Bridge Creek to his son Timothy. " I
give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Mary, wife of Paul
Haseltine, four pounds lawful money of the Province of the
Massachusetts Bay."
The will was written in Worcester (County?), MA
and witnessed by Daniel Hardy, Abigail Adams, and Jonathan Bond and
recorded by Francis Whipple, Justice of Peace. Your author notes that
the names Adams, Bond, and Whipple are found nowhere in surviving
records of Annapolis or Granville for the 1760s. Beriah Rice had close
cousins by these names living at Westborough, MA at the time that the
will was written. It is very likely that the will was written at
Westborough, MA116 {#5}.
He married
Mary GOODENOW 6 Jan 1730/31 at Westborough, MA1 {24, 62},45 {p10},57 {p161}.
She was born 5 Apr 1712 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p62},46 {1:33},
died after Jun 1763. Although we have no record of Mary's death or her living in
Nova Scotia, her husband Beriah Rice left her one half interest
in his farm and dwelling on the east side of Bloody Bridge
Creek in the Township of Annapolis, Nova Scotia. Your author
considers it quite certain that Mary lived at Annapolis Royal
after 1760 and died after Beriah's will was recorded, 27 June
1764116 {Wills 1:9},
daughter of Samuel GOODENOW
and Sarah BRIGHAM.
Beriah RICE and Mary GOODENOW were admitted to the church 30 May 1742 at Westborough, MA1 {p62}.

She was born 12 May 1695 at Marlborough3,
daughter of John BELLOWS
and Hannah.
She was also known as Ann.
She was also known as Joanna.
Although the Rice Genealogical Register describes her as Ann or Joanna,
daughter of Benjamin, her marriage record at Marlborough clearly
calls her Hannah, as do the birth records of all her children
at Westborough. She was evidently the daughter of John and
Hannah Bellows instead. The Marlborough vital records show no
trace of any Benjamin Bellows in that period.
