He married Ellen DURKEE 2 Apr 1812^{2 {115, 197}}. She was born 7 Oct 1792^{2 {p197},56}, died 8 Dec 1847 at Kalamazoo, MI^{2 {p197},56}, was buried at Kalamazoo, in Mountain Home Cemetery⁵⁶, daughter of Andrew DURKEE and Phebe.

He married Lucy JOSLIN. She died 25 May 1883, aged 80y at Waitsfield, VT^{2 {p197}}, daughter of James JOSLIN and Naomi DIGGINS. The identification of Moses Willard Rice's wife Lucy with the Lucy (Joslin) Rice who died in 1883 appears to be a mistake. According to the Waitsfield history, Lucy Joslin (born in Waitsfield) married Salmon Rice in 1823, whereas Moses' wife was probably from Walpole, NH. Further research is needed on this Lucy.^{323 {p439}}

Note that the Hardwick vital records also show the intention of marriage between Mary Rice of Rutland and LEVI Freeman the previous month^{115,2 {p263},45 {p23}}. He was born 3 Jul 1749 at Hardwick¹¹⁵, died 10 May 1816, aged 67y at Hardwick^115,20, son of John FREEMAN and Joanna. His will was proved 15 Apr 1816 in Worcester County, MA²⁰.

Ward asserts that this is the Ruth Rice who married John Rice (WRN 1182) of Charlemont. However, the probate records for the estate of Ruth's father make it clear that she married Jacob Wetherell.

She was born Jun 1764 at Martha's Vineyard, MA³²⁵, died 22 Jan 1841, aged 77y at Northumberland, Saratoga Co, NY (under the name Rice), from nervous prostration³²⁵, daughter of Reuben LUCE and Jemima BUTLER.

Jedediah RICE MD

i: Mehitabel RICE [QQ58665, w1487], born 27 May 1750 at Hardwick^{115,1 {p112}}. She died 2 Dec 1830, aged 78y (sic) at Spencer, MA (under the name White)¹¹³. There is some confusion between the two nearly contemporary Mehitabel Rices of Worcester County, one (WRN 1487) the daughter of Jedediah and Mehitabel (Cutter) Rice, and the other (not mentioned by Ward) the daughter of Nathan and Mehitabel (Baldwin) Rice. Ward states that the first of these was the bride of Rand White of Spencer, while the Rice Gen'l Register assigns that role to the second one. The available evidence is not compelling for either one. For example, the death record of the widowed Mehitabel (Rice) White gives an estimated birth in 1752, while the two candidates were born, respectively in 1750 and 1754. Still, the relative rarity of the name Mehitabel suggests that one or the other is likely to be the bride. For want of better evidence, we are following Ward.^{1 {p112},2 {p118}}

Ephraim RICE

i: Simeon RICE [QQ4643], born about 1752 at probably Hardwick, MA, (not found in the published records)^{2 {p115}}. He died after 1804^{328,2 {p115}}. Relocated in 1778 to Somerset, VT, with his brothers³³⁰. He resided in 1804 in Vermont, going with Daniel and Perez^{2 {p115}}. He was living in 1804, the date of Perez's Will^{2 {p115}}.
ii: Daniel RICE [QQ4591], born 5 Aug 1755 at Hardwick, MA, but not listed in Hardwick VR^{2 {115, 198},60,331 {Exhibit L},332 {p169}}. He died 28 Aug 1831 at Dover, VT^{2 {p198},56,60,158 {Somerset 2:30 and Dover records},331 {Exhibit L}}. He was buried at Dover, in Mountain View Cemetery^{56,2 {p198}}. He began military service 28 Apr 1775 in Vermont, and on August 14, 1777, while in Wilmington, he heard that the British army was marching toward Bennington. He hastened back home, shouldered his musket and started through the wilderness, across the Green Mountains, to Bennington, where he arrived in time to participate in the memorable battle at that place^{332 {p169},330,333}. He resided in 1776 at Somerset, VT, as the first settler. He staked out land in the Great Meadows section northwest of Mt. Pisgah (later called Somerset Mountain and is now called Mt. Snow; the Great Meadows area is covered almost entirely by the Somerset Reservoir at the present). He wintered in Hardwick, MA, and came in the spring to tend his new land while living in a shanty until 1781^{56,60,332 {p169}}. He remained with the Continental Army for 3 months after the Battle of Bennington (14 August 1777), having served during the American Revolution. Massachusetts muster rolls, 1 August 1777, show that he served with Capt Simeon Hazelton, 5th Co., Col John Fellows, 8th Regt.^{332 {p169}} He was the Town of Dover's first Representative (to the Vermont state legislature), holding that office from 1799 through 1802 and Town Clerk in 1800, 1802-1804 and 1813; also Treasurer in 1800 and 1802 in 1799 at Somerset (became Dover), VT³³⁴. He resided after 1800 at along "The Handle Road", Somerset (now West Dover), VT³³¹. He was living in 1804, being mentioned in the will of Perez^{2 {p115}}.

He married Sally BALL 16 Jun 1782 at Somerset, VT (under the name Bard)^{335 {Somerset 2:24}}. She was born 10 Feb 1764, probably in Massachusetts or Vermont^{336 {p172},2 {p198},56}, died 13 Feb 1838, aged 74y at Dover, VT (under the name Rice)^{158 {Somerset 2:30 and Dover records},336 {p172},56,2 {115, 198}}, was buried at Dover, in Mountain View Cemetery^{56,2 {115, 198},158}, daughter of David BALL and Sarah BADCOCK. She was also known as Sarah³³⁷.
iii: Perez RICE [QQ4644], born 1 May 1757 at Hardwick or Sutton, MA, but not mentioned in Hardwick or Sutton VR^{2 {p115},56,60}. He died 9 Sep 1807, aged 50y at Wardsboro South District (now Dover), VT, when the well he was digging for his home caved in upon him^{56,60,158 {1:179},330}. He was buried at Dover, VT, in Mountain View Cemetery^{56,158 {1:179},330}. He was also known as Percy⁶⁰. He resided in 1778 at Somerset, VT, returning with Daniel⁶⁰. The younger Perez stayed with his Aunt Chloe until he was 24, two years after his marriage. At that point, young Perez settled on land probably bought from his late uncle's estate. He made a will 31 May 1804 at Wardsboro South District, VT, which was probated 22 September 1807 at Marlboro, VT, the Honorable Gilbert Denison, Esq., Judge. The will mentions: Chloe Rice, widow to Perez Rice; Thomas Rice, now living with me; his (Perez) mother; brother John's widow; Perez Rice son to brother John; sister Susannah Wadkins children; Calvin Orcutt; Thomas Palmer; Levi Crosbee³²⁸. In his History of Stratton, Vermont David Kent Young recounts:

"Percy (Perez) bought a large tract of land. Some of this was in the eastern part of Somerset, along the Wardsboro line, while the rest was on the Wardsboro side of that line (the current Wardsboro/Dover/Stratton area known as Dover Mountain).

"Percy built a home on the Wardsboro side of his property. He probably owned much of the area southeast of what is now Pike Hollow Rd..

"Percy was Constable of Somerset in 1792 and the town's treasurer in 1793, 1794 and 1796.

"Percy and Chloe were childless, and so when John Rice died in 1803, it was natural for them to take in John's family, including a nephew, who also was named Perez. Percy mentioned his nephew, Perez, in his will, leaving him $200.00, provided the younger Perez would stay with Chloe until he reached the age of 21."^{338 {Rice}}

He married Chloe LINCOLN 8 Apr 1779 at Hardwick, MA^{115,2 {p115}}. She was born about 1755³³⁰, died 17 Jul 1831, aged 76y³³⁰, was buried at Dover, VT, in Mountain View Cemetery³³⁰.
iv: Susannah RICE [QQ4645], born about 1759 at Hardwick or Sutton, MA, but not mentioned in Hardwick or Sutton vital records. The 1804 will of her brother Perez mentions "sister Susannah Wadkins' children," possibly, but not necessarily, indicating that she was already dead. In any event, it indicates that she had married a Wadkins or Watkins, but not which one. The Rice Gen'l Register speculates that she was the Susannah who married Stephen Watkins in 1789, but Ward identifies that Susannah as (WRN 1456). Ward's scenario is somewhat more plausible, and we follow that here, pending further research.^{1 {p109},2 {p115}}

She married Stephen? WATKINS. He was thinly documented. His identity is unknown.
v: John RICE [QQ4646], born about 1762 at probably Hardwick, MA^{2 {p115}}. He died 24 Jun 1803^{2 {p115},60,328,338 {Rice}}. Occupation: believed to have been a teacher, at Hardwick, MA⁶⁰. There has been some question about the ancestry of John Rice. One John Rice of Hardwick married a Sarah Woods of Greenwich in 1789 (listed as Polly Woods in the marriage record at Petersham). The Hardwick vital records also show the marriage of a John Rice to a Betsey Ruggles in January 1809 and the birth of Betsey Ruggles Rice, daughter of John of Somerset, baptized in December 1809. Perez Rice's will in 1804 refers to "Brother John's widow", so the John Rice who married Betsey cannot be Ephraim's son and Perez's brother, since the marriage was in 1809, 5 years later than the will.

Mrs. Betsey Rice and Mrs. Peggy Rice are buried in the Mountain View cemetery, close to Daniel and Perez, and Betsey is connected to Hardwick as well as Somerset, VT, so there is probably a close relationship here. The dates are such that the John who married Betsey could be the son of John and Sarah, but no clear evidence supports that theory either.

The family bible of Orrin A. and Melissa M. (Rice) Johnson lists John and Sally Rice as the parents of the children listed here (Clarissa, Anna, Susannah, Perez and Willard), but there are some contradictions too. It gives John's birth year as 1770 (which is possible because the 1762 listed is approximate), but also claims he died June 24 1803 (which meshes with Perez' brother John having died before the will in 1804), but claims he died at the age of 99 years and 11 months (the birth and death dates would have made him 33 years and 11 months)! It also lists an additional child, Shadrack, born in 1805. The choices of the names Perez and Susannah for John & Sally's children give credence to his being Ephraim's son, since these would be names of his siblings. The will of Perez Rice, 1804, mentions "Perez Rice son to brother John".

In a letter to Erwin's daughter Mickey Snow, dated August 11, 1995, David Kent Young questioned the ancestry of John Rice. Kent listed his John's wife as Sally Cooper - not Sarah or Polly Woods - and listed the children as Perez, Susannah and Willard, the same as listed in the above family bible. More recently in a note to Lynn McLaughlin on March 18, 2001 Kent said about John Rice: "He certainly was a son of Ephraim, since his son, Perez, was raised by his uncle Perez."

In Grains of Rice, the author Peggy Grosser lists her ancestor Willard Rice, who married Bathsheba Kelley, as being the son of John Rice and Sarah Woods, and John as being the son of Ephraim. She lists a Shadrack as being another child of Ephraim mentioned in a deed from 1773.^{330,115,339 {p304},340,338 {Rice}} John Rice's family was living at Somerset, VT, following his death; however, it is not known whether they had moved there prior to or after John's death. Although John could have moved his family to that area in late 1802 or early 1803, then passed away shortly after, it is also possible that his wife and children moved to Somerset after his death to be cared for by John's brother Perez and his wife Chloe.

Sally did not remarry, but did have another child, Shadrach. Unfortunately Shadrach's father's name is unknown.⁶⁰

iv: Paul HAZELTON [QQ256144], born 11 Aug 1764³⁴⁷. There is serious confusion over Paul's life and death. The transcription found in the Pawlet town records of a gravestone in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Granville, NY, just across the state line from Pawlet, VT, reads, "Hazleton Paul son of Paul Hazleton died Aug 5 1793 in the 26th year of his age." On the other hand, the vital records of Pawlet show a marriage between Paul Hazleton and Rachel Butts in 1797, and the 1800 census shows a Paul Hazelton between 26 and 45 years of age in Tinmouth, just east of Pawlet. The conclusion is inescapable that there were two Pauls of roughly the same age in this area. The fact that the gravestone specifically names the father of the 1793 decedent strongly suggests that "our" Paul is the one who died in 1793, and so all events after that date attributed to "our" Paul should be viewed with suspicion. The suggestion that the gravestone actually marks the grave of Miriam Hazelton, Paul's wife, is simply not credible.^{158,335,289 {52:242}} He was "warned" out of town 16 Aug 1806 at Dorset, VT³⁴⁷.

Relationships not specified however he left his estate to the following: Samuel W. Barteaux, Abel W. Barteaux, Reece Goucher, G.E. Spurr and Samuel W. Baker^{116 {#976}}. The parents and Rice ancestors of Samuel are doubtful. Your authors note that Samuel is not mentioned in Obadiah Wheelock's will. Note also that Rachel Rice was born in 1745 so Samuel would have had to be born before 1795.^{116 {#4131}}

She made a will 2 Jul 1883 at Torbrook, Annapolis Co, NS, as Ann Eliza Wheelock of Torbrook, widow of Samuel Wheelock, referring to heirs of her husband's will as Reis Goucher, Abel Berteaux, George E. Spurr, Samuel Baker and Samuel W. Berteaux. She left items and land to Frederic Morse, two nieces Emeline Morse and Mary Jane Rogers, niece Ada Berteaux, and niece Maria Hardwick.

Administration was granted to David Berteaux and Edward Berteaux, sons of the executor Edward Berteaux named in the will, "recently died"^{116 {#1215}}.

Beriah RICE Jr

Beriah RICE Jr [QQ2880, w670] (Beriah⁴, Anna³, Edward², Edmund¹) , born 16 Aug 1747 at Westborough, MA, (not found in the published records)^{45 {p10}}, son of Beriah RICE and Mary GOODENOW. He died before 1818 at Baddeck, Cape Breton Co, NS, as his wife was listed as a widow in the 1818 census at Baddeck, Cape Breton^{351 {Division of Baddeck}}. Removed 17 May 1760 from Boston, MA, on the ship Charming Molly with 45 persons aboard. The record of that voyage has survived and names the three Rice men -- Benjamin, Stephen, and Beriah. The named Beriah may have been this Beriah or Beriah's father^{2 {p116},118 {p150}}. He resided between 1760 and 1770 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS^{118 {p156}}. He resided between 1792 and 1793 at McNabs Island, Halifax, Halifax Co, NS, where he was listed on the tax assessment record as a laborer³⁵². Some family historians have said that there were two Beriah's and some, three. Few documents of that time have survived. We are indebted to the late Dr Laurence Patterson, late Director Emeritus of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association, who discovered the following memorial, extracted from the Cape Breton Land Papers 1800-1808. This land paper provides very compelling evidence that there were only a Beriah Sr and Beriah Jr:

"The memorial of Beriah Rice, born in America humbly sheweth. That your Honor's memorialist hath been in the Province of Nova Scotia and this Island since the fourteenth year of his age ... that your memorialist has been a married man since the year 1775 - his first wife dying after having a family of ten children - six of which are now living some with families and some singel (sic), that your memorialist is now married to a second wife - having now a family by her in three years, two children. The whole of your memorialist's offspring being bred to Industry in the farming line --- your memorialist hopes if encouraged by your Honor with a license of occupation for whatsoever quality of land your Honor may think (fitting for his) use by bringing his offspring together - hopes in the fiture (sic) that there may be a settlement of a little village of His own family.

"That your memorialist hath been for nearly two years living in a house of Robert Mugford, at Baddeck, in assisting him and adjoining to his premises hath in the course of these last two years cleared and cultivated about 7 or 8 acres which were never cleared, occupied, or possessed before ... ... Beriah Rice, Sydney C.B. October 30, 1801."

The Cape Breton Land Paper and the Parish Record of St George Church, Sydney, NS provide compelling evidence that Beriah's second wife in 1799 was Catherine Owens and that Beriah and Catherine had at least two children. One of their children was Catherine Rice, born before 18 September 1799.^{353,2 {p116},45 {p10}}

He married first, Meriam about 1770 in Annapolis County, NS, as inferred from land records. Recent research by Sherri Tomiak (2004) into the land records for Annapolis and Halifax counties shows that Beriah Rice and Meriam Rice, his wife, signed land papers as early as January 1770 and as late as March 1783 as residents of Annapolis, as residents of Dartmouth between March 1787 and December 1789, and as residents of Halifax in February 1790. Based on these land records we can conclude that Beriah Rice's first wife was Meriam and that she was alive as late as 1790. The Rice Gen'l Register asserts that her maiden name was McSweeny, but omits her forename^{2 {p116},354}. She died before 1798³⁵³. They resided between 1770 and 1783 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS³⁵⁴. They had 10 children.³⁵³

He married second, Catherine OWENS about 1798 in Nova Scotia^{353 {30 Oct 1801},355 {p87}}. She was born about 1757³⁵⁶, died before 1804³⁵³. Your authors have concluded that the Rice Gen'l Register is unreliable in regard to Beriah's family, relying, as it does, on Calnek and Savary. There seems to be no other evidence that Beriah married Naomi McQuillin.^{2 {116, 199}} They resided 30 Oct 1801 at Baddeck, Cape Breton Co, NS³⁵³.

He married third, Catherine Ann after 1801, or perhaps Beriah had only two wives. In any case, the 1818 census tells us that his last wife was the mother of Robert Muckford Rice and that her name was Catherine Ann. There is speculation (but no evidence) that she was the daughter of Robert Mugford, who befriended Beriah^{351 {Baddeck district},353}. She was thinly documented. She resided 20 Jun 1818 at Baddeck, NS, as a widow with seven children^{351 {Baddeck district}}.

He was born 1 Oct 1770 in Annapolis County, NS³⁴⁶, died in 1821 at Granville, Annapolis Co, NS^{116 {#4082}}, son of Valentine TROOP and Catherine CHURCH. He made a will about 1821 at Granville, calling himself a "freeholder" and mentioning wife Sarah (who remarried in 1824 to Benjamin Reid of Hopewell, NB); eight daughters the eldest of whom was Sophia; son-in-law William H. Morse; brother George; kinsman Joseph Fellows^{116 {#4082}}.

She married second, Benjamin Belcher REED about 1825 at All Saints Anglican Church, Granville, Annapolis Co, NS, as inferred from an entry for Benjamin: "Benj Reed Married for his second wife Sarah Troop Widdow of the late Joseph Troop of Granville and the Daughter of... Rice of Annapolis and had by her Joseph Troop their son Born 17 July 1826. Sarah his Wife departed this life 26 March 1827." It is likely that Sarah was born in Annapolis County and remained there when her father moved to Cape Breton^{342 {film C-3027, p. 239}}. He was born 26 Feb 1777 at Horton, Kings Co, NS³⁵⁷, died 24 Apr 1860 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS³⁵⁷, son of Duncan REED and Zerusha POST.

F B Wichman, in his Lineage of Richard King (1819-18xx), lists one of the offspring of Lydia Smith (b1753) and Isaac King Jr as John King (b1782) who married a Letetia ? on 28 December 1808. It is likely that this is the second marriage of Letetia Rice, daughter of Beriah Rice Jr and mother of Elizabeth McKillup who married Thomas King, Thomas being an earlier offspring of Lydia Smith and Isaac King Jr!^{358 {Chart 70},2 {p199}}
v: Asaph RICE [QQ256041], born about 1778, according to his obituary¹⁷⁰. He died 11 May 1860, aged 82y at Bridgetown, Annapolis Co, NS, according to his obituary^{170,2 {p199}}. The Rice Gen'l Register reports that Asaph was born in Cape Breton, NS. We know that Asaph's father, Beriah Jr, started out in the Annapolis Valley, moved to Dartmouth, and arrived in Cape Breton about 1799. Note that Asaph's sons were recorded in Bridgetown, Annapolis County, in the mid 19th century and that Asaph died there in 1860. It is almost certain that Asaph was one of Beriah Jr's first offspring and that he was born in Annapolis County.

He married Nancy ELDERKIN 9 Jun 1803 at Horton, Kings Co, NS, performed by Rev Twining^{359 {p205},2 {116, 199}}. She was born 5 Apr 1784³⁶⁰, daughter of Jeptha ELDERKIN and Emma JOHNSON.
vi: Frances RICE [QQ255967], born about 1783. The date and place of Frances' birth are not known. Beriah and Meriam Rice were recorded in land transactions at Annapolis between 1770 and 1783, at Dartmouth between 1787 and 1789 and at Halifax in 1790. Beriah Rice was listed on a tax roll in Halifax in 1792³⁶¹, baptized 26 Mar 1801 at Saint George's Church, Sydney, Cape Breton Co, NS³⁶². She died 7 Jun 1866 at Mira Gut, NS^{363 {1803:10},362}.

She married Hezekiah SPENCER 30 Mar 1801 at Saint George's Church, Sydney, Cape Breton Co, NS^{355 {p104},362}. He was born 16 Dec 1772 at Claremont, NH^361,362, died Jun 1851 at Mira Gut, NS^361,362, son of John SPENCER and Esther BUNNELL.

She married Robert CRANTON 26 Sep 1816 at Margaree^{2 {p199},346}. He was born 19 May 1795³⁶⁴, died 10 Oct 1871 at Margaree³⁶⁴, son of Captain Robert CRANTON and Ann STONE. He resided in 1871 at Margaree, with his son Henry Cranton according to the 1871 census³⁶⁵. Robert and Catherine were "among the charter members of the Congregational Church organized in 1822. The land on which the first church was built, and where the cemetery now is at Margaree Centre, was donated to the church by this fine pioneer couple."³⁶⁶
ii: Sophia RICE [QQ256022], born about 1801 in Nova Scotia, age 80 in the 1881 Canada census³⁶⁷. She died 15 Feb 1892 at Brooklyn, Kings Co, NY, at the home of her son Rev. J. B. McQuillin^132,367.

She married David Parker MCQUILLAN 22 Jul 1818 at Baddeck, Cape Breton Co, NS, not at St George Church^{355 {12, #34}}. He was born 27 Sep 1792 at Seabrook, NH³⁶⁷, died 2 May 1867 at Mira Bay, Cape Breton Co, NS^{363 {1803:20},367}, was buried at Mira Gut, NS, in Mira Bay Baptist Cemetery³⁶⁷. Occupation: a joiner, in 1818^{351 {Baddeck district}}. He was in the military between 1812 and 1815, during the War of 1812 as a member of the militia of New Hampshire³⁶⁷. He resided 20 Jun 1818 at Wasabackteh, Baddeck, Cape Breton Co, NS, where he declared that he had been born in the United States and was a resident for 10 months^{351 {Division of Baddeck}}.

i: Robert Muckford RICE [QQ256009], born 23 Jun 1807, (1805 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Baddeck, Cape Breton Co, NS^{368,360,2 {199, 367}}. He died 18 Feb 1892 at Little Bras d'Or, NS, at age 87. His obituary said in part: The death of Robert M. RICE occurred at his home, Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton, Feb. 15, age 87, and his wife, Sarah RICE, also died the following day, age 84. They had been married 62 years. Bro. Rice was born in Baddeck where at the time of his death his father was the only Baptist in the place. Sister Rice was born at Margaree, being the daughter of the late James INGRAHAM of that place. Bro. and Sister Rice were baptized into the membership of the Margaree Baptist Church by Father Dimock during one of his missionary visits to Cape Breton. On their removal to Little Bras d'Or, Bro. and Sister Rice united with the North Sydney Baptist Church during the pastorate of Father Richardson and were at the time of their death, the oldest members of that church. The hospitality of the aged couple was proverbial. Bro. Rice carried on for some years, in addition to farming, a grist mill, a shingle mill and a saw mill. His parents were U.E. Loyalists. The Rices first settled in Digby, N.S. where the Rice family still live. Brier Island was called after Brier RICE, the deceased's father who at that time owned the island. Bro. and Sister Rice had a family of twelve children and ten survive of whom eight, five sons and three daughters, were at the funeral of their parents, seven being at the bedside of their mother when she passed away. The aged husband and wife were interred Sunday, 21st Feb., the caskets being placed side by side in one grave. The day following the burial, information was received of the death at Brooklyn, N.Y. of Bro. Rice's sister, Mrs. McQUILLAN, age 90, widow of Rev. David McQUILLAN and mother of Rev. J.B. McQUILLAN, at whose house she died. Sister McQuillan died on Monday, Bro. Rice on Thursday and Mrs. Rice on Friday, all in one week^{360,2 {p367},369 {4:1277},132}. He was buried at North Sydney, Cape Breton Co, NS, in Lakeside Cemetery⁵⁶.

He married Sarah Maria INGRAHAM 17 Mar 1830^{368,2 {199, 367}}. She was born in 1808^{368,360,2 {p367}}, died 19 Feb 1892, aged 84y at Little Bras d'Or, NS^{360,2 {p367},369 {4:1277},132}, daughter of James INGRAHAM and Ann MUCKFORD. She was also known as Sarah Margaret^{343 {p960},2 {p367}}. Robert Muckford RICE and Sarah Maria INGRAHAM resided between 1830 and 1838 at Margaree, Inverness Co, NS, and joined the Baptist church there in 1835³⁶⁸. They resided after 1838 at Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton Co, NS, and joined the Upper North Sydney Baptist Church by letter of transfer on 15 November 1838³⁶⁸. They were enumerated in 1881 at Ball's Creek District, Cape Breton Co, NS, Robert Rice, male, married, 75y, born Nova Scotia, occ: farmer;

He possessed a vigorous intellect and an amenity of manners, that qualified hem for extensive usefulness, without giving offence to any one; hence he enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens, and received the honors they had to bestow.^{1 {p192}}
