(not found in the published records)1 {p107}.
He was in the military in 1757,
serving in the French War from Westborough, belonging to Capt. Bezaleel Eager's Company1 {p107}.
He made a will Mar 1778,
mentioning wife Betsy; daughter Asenath Hastings; sons Luther, Calvin,
and Israel; and an unborn child who is to receive £50 at age 21. Son Luther, Executor1 {p107}.
His will was proved 6 May 17781 {p107}.

(not found in the published records)1 {p107},

He married second,
Betsy TAYLOR 20 May 1777 at Northborough1 {p107},59 {p110}.
She was thinly documented.
Children of Asa RICE and Elizabeth LIVERMORE:
- i
- Catherine RICE
[QQ58563, w1421],
born 13 Dec 1749 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p107}.
She died before 1778,
as she was not mentioned in her father's will.
- ii
- Asenath RICE
[QQ58566, w1423],
born about 1751 at Northborough, MA294.
She died 4 Sep 1836 at Marlborough, NH225 {p523},294.
She married
Thaddeus HASTINGS 13 Dec 1774,
(20th per Ward) at Northborough, MA59,1 {p107}.
He was baptized 12 Oct 1746 at Shrewsbury, MA22 {77:20},294,
died 30 Nov 1838 at Marlborough, NH225 {p523},294,
son of Nathaniel HASTINGS
and Esther PERRY.
Thaddeus is said to have settled in Marlboro, NH in 1770 without a
family and was the first settler on the farm known, in 1906, as the
Hastings place. At the first town meeting of the incorporated town in
1777 he and three others were elected as "fence viewers". (History of
Marlboro, NH)
The Military History of Marlboro includes Thaddeus as a Revolutionary
War soldier; however his application for pension in 1834 was
rejected by the court because he did not serve six months. He did
serve in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in the War of 1812 from
13 September to 7 November 1814 in Capt. J. Tucker's Company,
Lt. Col. J. Page's Regiment at Ft. Warren, Boston Harbor.294

He was buried at West Boylston, MA,
in Town Cemetery183.
He was in the military in 1775,
serving in Wood's Company, Ward's Regiment from Northborough, Mass1 {p185}.
He married
Betsy BEAMAN in 1786,
Betsy of Boylston1 {107, 185},45 {p45}.
She was born 12 Jun 1767 at Shrewsbury, MA52,1 {p185},2 {p261},
died 16 Apr 1836,
aged 69y
(under the name Rice)183,1 {p185},2 {p261},
was buried at West Boylston, MA,
in Town Cemetery183,
daughter of Major Ezra BEAMAN
and Persis KEYES.
She made a will 30 Jan 1836,
mentioning daughters Betsy Eames and Persis Eames, son-in-law
Joseph A. Reed who married daughter Mary B. Rice, other daughters
Harriet Nickson, Levinah B. Reed, and Catherine French, and sons
Asa Rice and Jabez Rice named as executors1 {p185}.
Her will was proved 7 Jun 18361 {p185}.
They declared their intention to marry 29 Jul 1786 at Boylston, MA97,2 {p261}.
They resided at West Boylston, Oakham, and lastly at Worcester1 {p185}.
Supplement 1 and the Rice Gen'l Register mistakenly attribute two
children to this family who belong to a different couple also named
Luther and Betsy/Elizabeth Rice. In fact, this other couple lived
in Boylston from the 1780's to about 1810, thus doubling the
confusion, as Betsy Beaman came from that town. Nonetheless,
there are sufficient clues to disentangle the two families,
including Betsy's will (q.v.) and the Revolutionary War pension
claim filed by the other Luther after moving to Maine.
The only really confusing aspect is that both families had daughters
named Betsy in the year 1786, but only one of the births is recorded
in the vital records. Even here, the ambiguity is resolved by the fact
that the recorded birth (in Boylston) came before the intention of
marriage was even filed for this Luther Rice and Betsy Beaman.1 {p185},14 {44, 45}
- iv
- Calvin RICE
[QQ58568, w1424],
enumerated in 1790,
(household of 124--) at Northborough, MA306.

He married
Betty MAYNARD.

and Dorothy RICE.

[QQ58572, w1427],
born 19 Nov 1737 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p107},2 {p261},45 {p22},56.
She died 6 Sep 1820
(under the name Putnam)56.
She was buried at Marietta, OH,
in Mound Cemetery56.
She married
Rufus PUTNAM 10 Jan 1765 at Westborough, MA,
listed as Rufus of Brookfield and Persis of Westborough57,110,1 {p107},2 {p261},45 {p22}.
He was born 9 Apr 1738 at Sutton, MA308,74,56,
died 4 May 1824 at Marietta, OH308,56,
was buried at Marietta,
in Mound Cemetery56,308,
son of Elisha PUTNAM.
He was in the military serving in the Continental Army from 1775 to 1783. After the battle of
Lexington, Putnam enlisted the same day, on April 19, 1775, in one of
Massachusett's first revolutionary regiments. Putnam later was
commissioned in the Continental Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, under
the command of David Brewer. Brewer's regiment first engaged with the
British Army in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Drawing from his knowledge and
skill as a millwright, Putnam constructed the fortifications necessary
to obtain victory. His fortifications provided an advantage to the
Continental Army, which secured victories at Sewall's Point,
Providence, New Port, Dorchester Heights, Long Island, and West Point.
General Washington appointed Putnam to be the Chief of Engineers of
the Works of New York. He was soon promoted to engineer with the rank
of colonel. When in December 1776 the Continental Congress rejected
his proposition to establish a national corps of engineers, Putnam
resigned.
He reenlisted in the Northern Army and served under Major General
Horatio Gates. Putnam commanded two regiments in the battle of
Saratoga. He continued to work on critical fortifications, including
Fort Putnam at West Point in 1778. In 1779 Putnam served under Major
General Anthony Wayne in the Corps of Light Infantry following the
capture of Stony Point, commanding the 4th Regiment. Putnam's
remaining military career was less eventful. In January 1783 he was
commissioned as brigadier general..
In 1788 Putnam led a group of Revolutionary veterans to settle the
land in what became Ohio. These pioneers arrived at the confluence of
the Ohio and Muskingum rivers on April 7, 1788, where they established
Marietta, Ohio as the first permanent United States settlement in the
Northwest Territory. Putnam was appointed to serve as one of three
judges of the Northwest Territory after Samuel Holden Parsons died.
The territory had been historically occupied by Native American
tribes, and more were driven west by colonial encroachment before the
Revolution. As they had not ceded any land, they came into conflict
with the arriving pioneers. They organized a coalition of tribes to
try to expel the Americans from their territory.
From 1792 to 1793, Putnam served as a brigadier general in Anthony
Wayne's Ohio campaign against these Native American tribes, including
Shawnee, Lenape and Seneca, who were ultimately defeated. In 1796,
Putnam was appointed by the President as the first Surveyor General of
the United States, a position he held until 1803. As Ohio residents
organized to write a constitution and be admitted as a state, in 1802
Putnam was elected a Washington county delegate to the Ohio
Constitutional Convention.
He was appointed as a Trustee of Ohio University, where he served for
two decades, from 1804 to 1824. It was constructed on public lands,
under the terms of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.308

where he had purchased land1 {p108}.
He was in the military in 1757,
serving as a soldier from Hardwick1 {p108}.
Children were born at Hardwick, and recorded there, but so
mutilated are the records that the names of four of them are
lost. No record there of the death of either of the parents.1 {p109}
He married
Hannah BARTLET 30 Jun 1742 at Grafton, MA,
listed as Oliver of Shrewsbury and Hannah of Grafton (erroneously called
Hannah Barrett by Ward)83,52,1 {61, 108},45 {p22}.
She was born about 1724,
as calculated from the baptism,
was baptized 27 Jul 1741,
aged about 17 at Grafton83.
The connection of Hannah to the Bartlet family in Newbury has been
proposed. That connection is based entirely on the lack of any other
known Hannah Bartlet of the right age in Massachusetts.

Abner MARBLE 19 Apr 1768 at Hardwick,
listed as Abner of Petersham. There is some
uncertainty about the parents of Zerviah Rice. As the Petersham
marriage intention lists Zerviah of Hardwick, we believe this is
compelling evidence that her father was Oliver Rice of Hardwick115,1 {p109}.
He was thinly documented.

Anna RICE
[QQ1780, w638] (Charles4, Anna3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 6 May 1722 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p61},
daughter of Charles RICE
and Rachel WHEELER.
She died after 1770 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS,
as deduced from the census. The 1768 census for Annapolis lists Ebenezer
Rice with 1 male and 3 females in the household. Sons Benjamin and
Joseph are listed separately. (Cousin Beriah Rice's family had already
moved away.) The three females can only be Anna (wife), Sarah
(b1753), and Elizabeth (b1756) as daughter Anna died in 1751.
The 1770 census lists four persons in the household, all
American. Therefore, your authors believe that Anna was alive
at Annapolis in 1768 and 1770118 {153, 156}.
She married
Ebenezer RICE 23 Mar 1743 at Westborough, MA,
listed as Ebenezer of Southborough57,1 {61, 83},45 {p15}.

died in 1793 in Annapolis County, NS118 {p569},
son of Ebenezer RICE
and Bethiah WILLIAMS.
He chose his uncle Stephen Williams, brother of his mother, as guardian on July 12, 1727.1 {p44}
Ebenezer RICE and Anna RICE resided after Apr 1743 at Westborough, MA1 {p83}.
They resided after 1760,
(Ward mistakenly has them moving to Conway, where some of their children settled) at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS1 {p83},118 {153, 156},117 {p105}.

Charles RICE
[QQ2835, w641] (Charles4, Anna3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 1 Mar 1730/31 at Westborough57,
son of Charles RICE
and Rachel WHEELER.
He died about 14 Mar 1758 at Brookfield, MA1 {p111}.
Charles was killed by Indians prior to 1758. Ward's The Rice
Family indicates that he, living in Westboro', served for 6
months in John Toplin's (militia) company in 1755 and in 1757 with
Captain Fay's (militia) company. It doesn't indicate whether Charles
was killed by Indians while on active duty or during some other
encounter. Evidently he and Leah Jennings were only married for 3
months before his death.
His widow Leah settled his estate. Inventory £425 29 December 1758,
one item of which included 100 acres of land in Brookfield, held by
deed from his brother Elijah Rice, dated 16 February 1754.
In settlement of her administration account, 30 April 1761, Leah claimed
"allowance for supporting Charles, the only child of her husband
Charles, 3 years old the 7th of March last, being but one week old at
the death of his father."1 {p111}
He married
Leah JENNINGS 6 Jan 1758 at Brookfield,
not listed as Charles of Westborough and Leah of Brookfield1 {61, 111},45 {p22},110 {p393}.
She was born about 1737,
as calculated from the gravestone, but she may have been the Leah
Jennings whose birth was recorded in Brookfield in 1731110,56,
died 5 Aug 1811,
aged 74y at Westminster, VT314,56,
was buried at Westminster,
in Old East Parish Cemetery56.

son Charles, 30 April 1761, soon after Leah married 2nd Jesse Burk.1 {p111}

Hepzibeth BRADISH
[QQ4242] (Damaris4 RICE, Anna3, Edward2, Edmund1)
,
born 23 Aug 1709 at Marlborough, MA3,2 {p27},46 {1:38},
daughter of James BRADISH
and Damaris RICE.
She married
Aaron HARDY 24 Mar 1730 at Westborough, MA2 {p27},57 {p128}.
He was born about 1705315 {p385},
was enumerated between 1768 and 1770 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS,
enumerated in 1768 with one male and one female, both (North)
American born; enumerated in 1770 with two in his household, both
American (not Nova Scotia) born118 {153, 155},
son of Samuel HARDY
and Rebecca FORBUSH.
He resided about 1765 at Annapolis,
as his name appeared on the petition to Grant Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis117 {p105}.
Although the Hardy/Hardie family genealogy lists Aaron Hardy's parents
as John Hardy and Anne Savory of Bradford, MA, we have found no other
evidence to support that supposed parent-child relationship. The 1710
census for Stamford, CT lists the children of Samuel and Rebecca
(Forbush) Hardy. The published vital records for Westborough and
Grafton show that sons Samuel, Daniel, and Phineas Hardy settled there
in the early 1700s. The familial relationships provide compelling
circumstantial evidence that Aaron was the brother of Samuel, Daniel,
and Phineas and the son of Samuel Hardy and Rebecca Forbush. That this
Aaron Hardy and his son Aaron (Jr) emigrated to Nova Scotia in the
early 1760s is also based on circumstantial evidence. We encourage
further research to provide more compelling evidence that this father
and son are the same Aaron Hardys who emigrated to Nova Scotia.
They were grantors in a land transaction selling land to Joel Brooks 7 May 1759 at Grafton, MA140 {Worcester County 42:561}.
Children of Hepzibeth BRADISH and Aaron HARDY:

He resided in 1765 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS,
as his name appeared on the petition to Grant Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis117 {p105}.
He made a will 10 May 1809,
which was filed for probate 12 April 1810. Children: Silas
Hardy, Marcy Wetherspoon, Aaron Hardy, Martha Slirk, Lydia
Heaton, Hephsibeth Hardy, Anne Rice, Levinia Hood, Sarah Hardy,
Polly Hardy116 {#3653}.
He married first,
Lydia WOODS 11 May 1763 at Southborough, MA55.
She was born 9 Sep 1742 at Southborough55,
daughter of Ephraim WOODS
and Mercy JOHNSON.
He married second,
Eunice GASKILL before 1770 in Nova Scotia. The Southborough vital records list the marriage of Aaron Hardy and
Lydia Woods on 11 May 1763. It is likely that this is either the
second marriage of Aaron Hardy (Sr) or first marriage of Aaron Hardy
(Jr). Was Eunice Gaskill the Eunice who was the wife of son Silas
Hardy? A search of deeds for Worcester County and Annapolis County
will perhaps resolve this question316 {p304}.
She was thinly documented.
