Moses RICE
[QQ3130, w816] (Jonas4, Jonas3, Thomas2, Edmund1)
,
born 16 Nov 1729 at Worcester, MA70,1 {p72},
son of Deacon Jonas RICE
and Jane HALL.
He married
Elizabeth GLEASON 21 Mar 1755,
(May per Ward) at Framingham, MA,
listed as Moses of Rutland and Elizabeth of Framingham16,99,1 {72, 130}.
She was born in 17351 {p130},
daughter of Ebenezer GLEASON
and Thankful JOHNSON.
There is a problem here. The only 1735 birth of an Elizabeth Gleason
in Framingham shows her parents as Ebenezer and Elizabeth, not
Ebenezer and Thankful as asserted by Ward. That birth record cannot be
explained as an momentary clerical error, since the death of Elizabeth
Gleason, wife of Ebenezer, was recorded just a month afterward. Also,
the other Ebenezer and his wife Thankful had a son Ebenezer just a few
months after that. For that matter, another Elizabeth was born in 1733
to Phineas and Elizabeth Gleason. In short, our Elizabeth's birth and
parentage are uncertain.16

She was born 10 Oct 1737 at Sudbury, MA,
(both the relevance and the accuracy of this Sudbury birth record
are questionable, as the parents have not been connected to Worcester
and are listed with other children in Sudbury as early as 1704/5)11 {p104},

,
born 5 Oct 1741 at Worcester, MA1 {72, 131},70 {p224},
son of Deacon Jonas RICE
and Jane HALL.
He died 21 Jun 1822,
aged 80y at Barre, MA98,1 {72, 131}.
His estate was inventoried 6 Jul 1822,
by Francis Rice, Administrator: $1894.401 {p131}.
He married first,
Hannah WRIGHT 15 May 1766,
(11th per Ward) at Rutland District (Barre), MA98 {p192},1 {72, 131}.
She was born 9 Apr 1741 at Framingham, MA,
but this identification is extremely doubtful. Only one of the
four children of Thomas and Hannah (Wright) Rice was named after
an identifiable member of Thomas' family (i.e., Thomas himself),
and the three others do not match any of the names in the family of
Nehemiah Wright of Framingham. Moreover, none of those Wrights
moved to what became Barre. Further, this date of birth does not
even line up with the reported age at death. The best that can be said
of this identification is that no other, better one has yet appeared16 {p212},
died 20 Jan 1774,
aged 31y at Rutland District (Barre), MA
(under the name Rice)98,1 {p131},
daughter of Nehemiah WRIGHT
and Mary GATES.
Thomas RICE and Hannah WRIGHT resided at Barre, MA,
with his father1 {p131}.
He married second,
Sarah NURSE 17 Nov 1774 at Rutland District (Barre), MA,
both of Rutland District98,1 {p131}.
She was born in 1749,
(your authors note that she may been a few years older than her
reported age at death, in which case she was probably the Sarah Nurs
born in 1744 at Rutland) at Rutland, MA1 {p131},
died 19 Sep 1799,
aged 50y at Barre, MA
(under the name Rice)98,1 {p131}.
He married third,
Abigail BARBER 11 Sep 1800 at Barre98,1 {p131}.
She was born about 17521 {p131},98 {p263},
died 23 Jun 1841,
aged 89y (87 per Ward) at Barre
(under the name Rice),
listed as Abigail on her gravestone, but as Catherine in the town death
register1 {p131},98 {p263}.
She made a will 10 Feb 1825,
mentioning Mary Bullard, Sarah
Bullard, Rebecca Boyden, Silas Barber, Lydia Dodge, John
Barber, Ebenezer Barber, Francis and Nancy Rice. Francis Rice,
Executor1 {p131}.

,
born 7 Oct 1746 at Worcester, MA70,1 {p72},
daughter of Absalom RICE
and Elizabeth FLAGG.
She married
Abraham GALE 28 Nov 1769 at Worcester,
listed as Abraham of Shrewsbury1 {72, 133},45 {p29},70 {p410}.
He was born in 17341 {p133},
son of Abraham GALE
and Esther CUNNINGHAM.
For lack of any better documention, we follw Ward's assigned birth
date of 1734 and parents Abraham and Esther Gale. This makes him a
first cousin of the Josiah Gale who married Abigail Rice's sister
Elizabeth. On the other hand, another possible candidate is the
Abraham Gale born in Watertown to Samuel and Rebecca. Also,
Suplement 1 assigned a birth date of 29 July 1745 which would make
Abraham the brother of the same Josiah Gale.1 {p133},45 {p29}
He was a sergeant in Capt. Moore's company of militia at the time of the
Lexington alarm and served in various regiments thereafter for about
five years. Later on, he took part in Shays' Rebellion and led a
company from Princeton to Worcester in 1786 to shut down the court
there. After the Rebellion was suppressed, he moved to New Hampshire.185 {2:108}
Abraham GALE and Abigail RICE resided about 1775 at Princeton, MA,
as the births of their younger children are recorded there1 {p133},106 {27, 28}.

Persis RICE
[QQ3157, w830] (Adonijah4, Jonas3, Thomas2, Edmund1)
,
born 3 Apr 1740 at Worcester, MA70,1 {p73},45 {p12},
daughter of Adonijah RICE
and Persis GATES.
The Supplement ascribes a death in 1777 to this Persis Rice, but the
identification is surely wrong. The Athol vital records do indeed
show the death of a Persis Rice on that date, but the Persis in
question was the daughter of Adonijah and Tamar Rice and was baptized
at Brookfield in 1768. Thus, she may indeed have been a second
daughter Persis of the same Adonijah and a second wife, or she may have
been the daughter of Adonijah (WRN 507), who Ward says died young
(q.v.). In either case, the supposed marriage of this
Persis (WRN 830) to Hezekiah Stowell is in doubt, as the vital records
actually show the bride in question to be Hepzibah Rice, not Persis.
Further research is needed to establish the identities.90,45 {p12}
Meanwhile, the Petersham vital records show the birth of a daughter
Persis to a Hezekiah and Persis Stowell in 1766, but no other entries
for any of those three.124
She married
Hezekiah STOWELL 24 Nov 1758 at Worcester,
transcribed as Hezekiah Howell and Hepzibah Rice in the vital records70,1 {p73},45 {p12}.
He was born 25 Dec 1732 at Watertown, MA34 {2:101},464,
died in 1790464.
