He was a farmer in Southborough, his lands being in the northern part of the town. He seems to have obtained them by purchase at various times from different people, as the deeds show. The property remained in the possession of his descendants until 1896, when it was purchased by the Boston Water Board, to become a part of its great reservoir.

    Before his death he executed a deed giving all of his real estate to his son Caleb; but the deed was not registered until after his death.

    He was a soldier of the Revolution--a minuteman on the first alarm. An abstract of his service is here given: "Ezra Newton. Southborough. Corporal in Capt. Elijah Bellows' Company, marched on Alarm April 19, 1775, to Lexington, served 15 days." Also: "In Capt. Seth Newton's Company, Col. Whitney's regiment, enlisted August 21, 1777, discharged August 26, 1777, served six days on Alarm at Bennington, VT; Company proceeded from Southborough to Hadley on horses; by order of the Brigadier; horse and mileage (80 miles) allowed home."

    His children were born in Southborough. He was head of a household there according to the First United States Census, 1790. The other members of it were one male above sixteen years and two females.175 {p237}

The Sarah Newton who died in Southborough in November of that year was a different person, aged 89.204,55 The Rice Gen'l Register asserts incorrectly that Sarah Brewer married the Reuben Newton born in 1748, son of Moses Newton, but the Newton genealogy makes it clear that Moses Newton returned to Connecticut soon after the births of his first two children at Southborough.2 {p232},175 {p186}

Abner RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Abner RICE [QQ462462] (Daniel4, Daniel3, Edward2, Edmund1) , enumerated in 1800, (household of 10001-30001) at Turin, Oneida Co, NY288 {23:221A}, son of Daniel RICE and Elizabeth TAYLOR. He died about 1810200. A YDNA test for a living male Rice descendant provides strong evidence that Abner Rice was a descendant of Edmund Rice. However, there is no compelling evidence that this Abner Rice is the Abner Rice born 21 March 1726 at Marlborough. The will of Daniel Rice names a son Abner Rice as the last heir: ... Jabez, and Abner (when he comes of age) ... " which suggests that the Abner born 1726 died young and a later Abner was born after Jabez. As other known contemporary Abner Rices are accounted for, we have provisionally given this Abner Rice parents Daniel Rice and Elizabeth Taylor of Marlborough, but we have not identified him as the Abner Rice born 1726.
