Although the Hubbardston church records show the death of the wife of Ithamar Newton in August of 1838, that record seems to be faulty. In particular, a Mrs Polly Newton, evidently the widow of Ithamar, married Luke Warren in 1841 and eventually died identified as the maiden Polly Nichols. It is possible that the 1838 event was actually the death of Ithamar himself, but further research is necessary to test that hypothesis.

Silas RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Silas RICE [QQ3508, w701a] (Peter4, Peter3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born about 1747 at Western (Warren), MA, but there is no official record of this birth. The proof that Silas was son of Peter is in the guardianship paper, which states that Abraham Rice is "nominated and allowed to be guardian unto Silas Rice, a minor, aged about fourteen years, son of Peter Rice, late of Western." Abraham was undoubtedly the youngest brother of Peter. Attached to the guardianship paper is another evidently in Silas' handwriting which reads: "This may certifie whom it may concern that I, Silas Rice, am come to the years of more than fourteen, and I chuse Abraham Rice for my guardian. Witness my hand Nov. 22, 1762. Silas Rice"2 {p116},45 {p11},20 {108:213},387, son of Peter RICE and Dinah WOLCOTT. He died 4 Jun 1821, aged 74y at Enosburg, VT2 {p116},45 {p11},388,56. He was buried at Enosburg, in Enosburg Center Cemetery56. Occupation: a farmer near Athol, MA for about 12 years. "A deed from Oliver Davis of Princetown to Silas Rice dated March 23, 1773, for land at Hubbardstown, which is in the general locality of Athol, may be the record of the place where Silas farmed387. Occupation: surveyor of highways, 30 Mar 1796 at Bennington, VT389 {p91}. He was in the military in 1777 at Sudbury, MA, serving at the Battle of Bennington (Vermont) under Capt. John Boynton and Col. Nathaniel Sparhawk, Massachusetts troops159,387 {p80},286 {#131250 and #32852}. He was called "Silas Rice of Bennington" in the Probate Court Record, Worcester, Massachusetts, dated 29 June, 1787, book 108, page 213. He was admitted freeman of the town 13 Jul 1791 at Bennington, VT389 {p2}.

Lucy Knapp and Silas Rice were married 14 February 1773 in Athol, MA. Lucy, in later years, told how, when she went to town to purchase her wedding dress, she had to travel over twenty miles with saddlebags filled with copper coins because England refused the colonies permission to use gold or silver. In this, and many other ways, England irritated the colonists. Lucy used to tell, with glee, of having been invited to a party as a young woman, and having all those ladies present leaving the tea in their cups, not drinking it, and going home when they were served tea, as a protest.387 {p123} Silas RICE and Lucy KNAPP declared their intention to marry 13 Feb 1773 at Petersham, MA, listed as Silas of Marlborough123 {p136},2 {p116},45 {p11}.

Benjamin RICE [QQ119773], born 8 Mar 1784, (1785 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Bennington, VT56,2 {117, 202},387,157. He died 8 Mar 1853, aged 69y at Enosburg, VT2 {p202},387,390,258 {2:149},56,157. He was buried at Enosburg, in Enosburg Center Cemetery387,56,157. Occupation: a farmer, at Enosburg387. At the age of 17 years, Benjamin hired out to Judge Robinson, living with and working for the Robinson family until he was 21 years old for which service he was to receive board and room, clothing, winter schooling, and at age 21, a 75 acre tract of land located in Enosburg, Vermont. In 1805 he was given title to the land, and in March 1806 he set off on a good riding horse, his wardrobe rolled and strapped to the saddle, on the 130 mile journey to the north from Bennington. He had only an axe and a knife with him, and a little money with which he secured board and room with a family named Bogue, near Enosburg. He then began the hard labor of clearing some of his land to farm. He built a simple log cabin, interior boards fastened with wooden pegs, roof of poles covered with heavy slabs of bark tied down with withes (he had no shingles). He made sashes for the two windows (one at each end of the cabin), chimney and fireplace of stone. He made all household furniture (crude but functional): a bedstead, table, chairs and stools, pails and tubs. He cut and stacked firewood to dry (to be ready for their first winter). Nearby he built a small barn for the horse. Then, having prepared the homestead, he returned to Bennington, married Matilda, and worked to earn money to buy livestock.

In March 1808, he and Matilda journeyed to their new home at Enosburg, with their first child, Mary. They went in a sleigh drawn by a stout horse, traveling without benefit of roads. They lived in the crude cabin, later building a larger cabin, and in 1818 they built the great farmhouse.

The farm produced to meet their needs. Maple sugar was made each spring, and was a treat which the Vermont family shipped west and shared with three generations of Rices in Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado.387,258 {2:149} He was sworn a freeman of the town 3 Sep 1805 at Bennington, VT389 {2:158}. He was in the military Sep 1814 at Plattsburgh, NY, being a Vermont Volunteer, War of 1812 - 6 days service to Plattsburgh, NY396 {p353}. The record of the descendants of Benjamin Rice is based in large part on interviews with his descendants conducted by James Albert Rice during the years 1995 to 1999. These interviews provided many valuable personal recollections about members of the family. This record is much enriched by these recollections.

Descendants of Benjamin Rice are reminded that you should confirm your line of descendance with primary records such as birth, marriage, and death certificates. Personal recollections provide superb pointers about where and when to look for primary records. However, personal recollections are sometimes not accurate in detail.

He married Matilda GABY 19 Apr 1807, (1 Jan per Rice Gen'l Register) at Bennington, VT, both of Bennington157 {2:340},2 {p202},387,390,389 {2:340}. GABY Sr and Esther TWITCHELL. Matilda was sister to Polly Gaby who married Benjamin's brother Abijah Rice. They raised a family who were all deeply committed to the church. Benjamin was a Deacon. He and Matilda and family began and ended each day with Bible reading and prayer. They were "Puritans" in the best sense of that tradition.387
