Ebenezer RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Ebenezer RICE [QQ3202, w856] (Elijah4, Elisha3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 12 Mar 1756, (11th per Crosby) at Shrewsbury, MA52,1 {p74},2 {p121},45 {p13},471, son of Elijah RICE and Huldah KEYES. He died Jun 1831 in Maury County, TN, (October at Hubbardston per Rice Gen'l Register)2 {p121},472. He was buried at Culleoka, Maury Co, TN, in Fountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery471. He began military service 23 Jul 1777. Although some histories have ascribed Ebenezer Rice's Revolutionary War service to Vermont, that service belongs to another Ebenezer/Eber Rice. The Daughters of the American Revolution have accepted the record of Ebenezer Rice from Massachusetts that reads: "Rice, Ebenezer. Private, Capt. John Crawford's co., Col. James Convers's regt.; enlisted July 23, 1777; discharged July 26, 1777; service, 4 days, at Rhode Island on an alarm; roll sworn to in Worcester Co.; also, same co. and regt.; enlisted Aug. 20, 1777; discharged Aug. 23, 1777; service, 5 days, including 2 days (40 miles) travel home; company marched on the alarm at Bennington of Aug. 20, 1777; roll sworn to in Worcester County160 {13:150},471. He resided about 1781 at Hubbardston, MA1 {p74}. He resided in 1802 in Maury County, TN, as Ebenezer and Roland Rice were signatories on a petition to the Tennessee General Assembly to establish a new county (now Maury County)471. He made a will 21 Jan 1831 in Maury County, which was recorded 6 October 1831. The will mentions wife Henrietta, son Ebenezer, daughter Sally Mayson(sic), son Abel, daughter Patsy Moore, son Joel, Sally Rice daughter of deceased son Rowan when she arrived to the age of eighteen, and Ebenezer Rice son of deceased son Rowan between age 19 and 21. Son Ebenezer Rice executor473. The reference in Ebenezer Rice's will to his wife Henrietta has long been interpreted as evidence that his second wife Ruth was also known as "Henrietta". However, recent research has found that Ebenezer received a settlement from the will of a Daniel Wilkes, presumably as a proxy for Daniel's daughter Henrietta. Thus it is reasonable to assume that Ebenezer Rice married a third time to Henrietta Wilkes. Regrettably we have no record of that marriage.

He married first, Sarah TAYNTOR 20 Sep 1780 at Princeton, MA106,1 {p74},2 {p121},45 {p13}. She was born 12 Mar 1756 at Shrewsbury, MA52,2 {p121}, died in 1790, but no record of her death has been found2 {p121}, daughter of Deacon Benjamin TAYNTOR and Sarah BRIGHAM. Ebenezer RICE and Sarah TAYNTOR resided about 1781 at Hubbardston, MA1 {p74}.

He married second, Ruth EVELETH 18 Dec 1791 at Hubbardston, described by Ward as Ruth Eveleth "of Stow". The published, condensed Hubbardston marriage record does not include Ruth's place of residence, and so the original must either state directly or imply she was of Hubbardston at that time1 {p74},2 {p122},248 {p161}. She was born 2 Jan 1758 at Rutland (Hubbardston), MA, with no middle name248,99,474, daughter of Joseph EVELETH and Patience HUNT. Although the Rice Genealogical Register describes her as Ruth Henrietta Eveleth of Stow, her birth was recorded in the vital records of Rutland and her marriage in the vital records of Hubbardston, a daughter town of Rutland. Both her birth and marriage records list her simply as Ruth Eveleth. Indeed, middle names were almost unheard of when she was born. Consequently, we must reject the Rice Genelogical Register's description for want of documentation.

Children of Ebenezer RICE and Sarah TAYNTOR:

i
Rolland RICE [QQ119942], born 12 Dec 1781 at Princeton, MA, (at Shrewsbury per Rice Gen'l Register)106,2 {122, 210}. He died about 1815 in Maury County, TN2 {p210}. He was also known as Rowland. He resided in 1802 in Maury County, as Ebenezer and Roland Rice were signatories on a petition to the Tennessee General Assembly to establish a new county (now Maury County)471.

He married Phereba. She was thinly documented.
ii
Ebenezer RICE Jr [QQ119944], born 4 Sep 1784 at Hubbardston, MA248,2 {122, 210}. He died 11 Mar 1855 at Jacksonville, IL2 {p210}.

He married Caty BALDRIDGE 29 Jan 1809 in Williamson County, TN2 {122, 210}. She was born 12 Jul 1790 in Tennessee2 {p210}.
iii
Sarah RICE [QQ119946], born 9 Nov 1787 at Hubbardston, MA248,2 {p122}. She died after 1830 in Illinois. She was also known as Sally2 {p122}.

She married Isaac MASON 16 Oct 1806 in Davidson County, TN, with a marriage bond dated 11 October 1806 and signed by Ebenezer Rice, presumed to be the father of Sally T Rice475,476. He was born 16 Apr 1782 in Tennessee413 {Equality, Gallatin Co., IL},141 {127:58.A17},475, died 5 Oct 1853 in Saline County, IL477,475, son of Isaac MASON. He was also known as James2 {p122}. Occupation: a farmer. He served as Ensign in 2nd Tennessee Volunteers under Thomas Hart Benton, Sr. and Andrew Jackson against the Creek Indians in 1812-1813. His brother Joseph Mason served in 2nd Tennessee Volunteers as Lieutenant from Williamson County, Tennessee. They marched to Fort Deposit, then Fort Strother at the Ten Islands on the Coose River. They fought in the Battle of Talahachee and the Battle of Teladega.

Peggy and Abram Mason lived between Widow Clark's place and John Nolen's stillhouse. At least eighteen men lived on this stretch of road, and were appointed on April 9, 1811 to keep the road in repair. The neighbors included both Abram's and Peggy's relatives, namely: Isaac and Thomas Mason, Samuel and Moses Currey, and Israel McCarroll.

At about quarter past two in the morning on a Monday, December 16th, 1811 all the houses along Mill Creek began to rattle. But before the half-awake people could gather their wits, the noise had ceased. While no apparent damage had occurred, they all knew they had experienced an earthquake. Many sat up the rest of the night, being too frightened to close their eyes before seeing the first light of day. The wives and servants prepared breakfast as usual that morning, though a little sleepy. Most had finished breakfast and possibly gone to check on a neighbor when the earth began to tremble again at 8:15. Once again no damage.

It would be two weeks before the newspapers carried the stories of the reverses in landscape along the Mississippi River, where swamps had become thirty feet deep lakes, and rivers nearby had gone dry. During the end of December and first part of January, 1812 the earth quivered slightly several times a day. The tremors came so often that sometimes it was difficult for one to tell if it was his imagination or not. On January 23rd, however, at 9 o'clock in the morning, there was no doubt in anybody's mind that a violent earthquake had just struck somewhere.

About 3:30 in the morning on February 7th, even the heaviest of sleepers was jarred awake by the churning earth. This time it was worse than ever, causing great fear for a few minutes. The described event would have been an earthquake along the New Madrid fault, south of St. Louis.

According to a Treasury Department Cover, Isaac Mason may have been in Gallatin County, IL by 1816. He was in Waconteby, White County, Illinois for the 1820 Census. According to Rynear Hall Mason's letter dated April 28, 1822, Isaac was in Illinois by this date, living on his own land. He is found in the 1830 Census in Equality, Gallatin County, Illinois living a house one apart from his son-in-law Henry Franklin Bourland. While his children do not track precisely with his known family, there was much movement within these two families due to the early death of Lydia Wiley Bourland and other events such as Henry Bourland's movement to and from Arkansas.

Isaac Mason had some business dealings with an Allen Moore in early Southern Illinois history, they bought property together in White Co and Hardin Co Illinois. A son of Allen Moore was administrator of Isaac Mason's will, Ebenezer R. Moore. Allen Moore also bought property as the assignee of Henry F. Bourland, 30 May 1835, 1 June 1835, 4 June 1835, each 40 acres, Section 10 and 14 S2E2SE1/4, Gallatin County in Saline County boundaries. There is a land transaction in Saline County, IL, noted as follows: July 27, 181 #3624 Allen Moore and Isaac Mason, White County, Illinois Territory 16.00 SE18; 7 S, 9 E 160.00.

He was buying land in Saline County, Illinois in 1833. These transactions are by Isaac and Thomas Mason and Henry F. Bourland. Isaac took 160 acres under a warrant and another 320 acres for which he paid 50¢ an acre.

The 1850 Saline County IL census: Isaac Mason, 67y, male, born TN; Lydia Mason, 38y, female, born PA; Franklin Bolin (sic), age 18, born IL; Samuel Bolin, 17y, born IL; Wm. Alexis Bays, age 16, born IL; Joseph S. Bays, 15y, born IL; Sarah Bays, age 12 born IL; Tarleton Bolin, 14y, born IL; Harvey Bolin, 10y, born IL; Joseph Postlewait, 13y, born IL; William Mason, 20y, born IL; Mary Mason, 43y, born TN; Mary A. Also Cyrus K. Maltby age 2 is listed in 1850 Gallatin Co census with a Siddall family.

Their marriage was listed in a bible found in an antique store in Virginia. It had been purchased by Tami Ramsey, who posted it on the Internet and then donated it to the State of Tennessee archives.

"My parents came to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin from their home in Burlington, Vermont in the fall of 1853. The first night we slept at the home of my uncle, Stephen Rice. This house has been recently removed to a new site to make room for the new post office. When we first came here (Fort Atkinson), there were three taverns, three stores, two places where they made wagons by hand, an old brewery and two blacksmith shops with one man at a place. At this time there were only thirty-two or thirty-three dwelling places. Father had bought goods here planning to start a store. So he began business in a building on Main Street where the Statz Store is now located. This building was moved to Mechanic Street and made into a residence and is now occupied by N. Weinberg. My father sold dry goods, groceries and clocks. He had brought two hundred clocks with him from Burlington. During the first year we did not make our salt. We were all very homesick, and planned to go back to Vermont the following fall."493 Isaac RALPH and Eusebia RICE were enumerated in 1880 at Fort Atkinson, Jefferson Co, WI, Isaac B.     The following is an interview with Stephen A. Rice as it appeared in the Jefferson County Union in 1897: "People don't half appreciate the great blessing of railways and cheap mail service nowadays. Why, just think of the change since I settled here in 1837. I had to drive up to Aztalan after all my mail then, as we had no post office here. I paid 44 cents for each letter that came from my old home, Warren, Vermont, and postage money was scarce then, too. I couldn't afford to get many letters. Postmasters didn't trouble themselves about delivering a letter that was paid in advance, so I had to write home not to prepay the letters as I might not get them. What a blessing it would have been if pioneers here could have heard from 'down East homes' as quickly and cheaply as the Montana settlers can hear from Wisconsin fathers and mothers now. It took six weeks for a letter to get to Vermont from here and the same time for an answer to get back. I remember a surprise visit I gave to my mother in 1844. I had a title to four fine eighties of land and a wife and two children that she had not even heard about. I rented my farm and we went East. We got to Vergennes, Vt., and had only twenty-four miles over the mountains to go to Warren. I remember the world was coming to and end about that time - it had been postponed once - and all the Vergennes people who could get horses to travel with, had gone to Hines, a few miles away, to the Advent meeting. The Adventists were called Millerites, after Miller, their leader. The liveries were all cleaned out and there seemed no chance at all for me, when the landlord says, 'Why, there's Stephen Bragg. He told me he was going over pretty soon to see his folks. He had a Concord buggy. You had better see him.' I saw him and soon struck a bargain. By the way, he was a brother of Wm. D. Bragg, one of the first settlers of Lake Mills, and he afterward came West and went into business at Cambridge. We got started early. Stephen took my wife and Matilda and the baby in the carriage. I was to walk. Now, I don't mind it at all. I could walk in those days. My two trunks were strapped on behind. No wonder Stephen threw in a chain to make the wheels drag in going down the mountain. Mrs. Rice wasn't used to those grades and I don't think she had as much confidence in Stephen as she had in me. She jumped out of the buggy every time we struck a steep one. You ought to have seen us going down the other side of the mountain. I would run down a piece and brace myself and say 'come on', and down she would slip, slide and run and come bang up against me. Stephen was behind with the wheels chained and they were screeching and moaning as they came down, and the buggy almost straight up in the air. Finally we got there. Mother was so pleased she cried over us, and I remember wishing it wasn't so hard a journey so we could think of coming again soon, and, in fact, wishing we could have come before we did. I tell you lack of transportation facilities in those days caused an immense amount of suffering that is scarcely thought of now."2 {p215},493
