Deacon Caleb RICE [QQ163, w69] (Joseph2, Edmund1) , born 19 May 1666 at Marlborough, MA3 {p153},1 {9, 40},2 {p4}, son of Joseph RICE and Mercy KING. He died 5 Jan 1738/39, aged 72y 7m 17d at Marlborough1 {p40},3 {p384},56. He was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56. He resided in 1696 at Marlborough1 {p40}. He made a will 1 Nov 1738, mentioning wife Mary; eldest son Josiah; 2nd son Jabez; sons Nathan and Caleb; daughters Sarah Rice and Keziah Rice1 {p41}. His will was proved 19 Feb 1738/391 {p41}.

He married Mary WARD 21 May 1696 at Marlborough3,1 {9, 40},2 {p4},45 {p5},46 {1:201}. She was born about 1676 at Marlborough, but the exact date of Mary's birth is not known, as it was not entered in the Marlborough vital records. Ward has confused Mary with her cousin Mary, born about the same time, whose birth is found there1 {p40},45 {p5}, died 18 Aug 1742, aged 64y at Marlborough, identified as the widow of Deacon Caleb Rice56,3,1 {p40},45 {p5}, was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56, daughter of Samuel WARD and Sarah HOW.

Joseph RICE

Joseph RICE [QQ1290, w70] (Joseph2, Edmund1) , born 5 Jan 1671, (June per Ward) at Marlborough, MA, erroneously recorded as a son of Martha3 {p157},1 {9, 41},2 {p4},45 {p5}, son of Joseph RICE and Mary BEERS. He died 3 Dec 1745, aged 74y 5m 28d at Marlborough3 {p385},56,1 {p41},45 {p5}. He was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56. He made a will 4 Sep 1744, mentioning wife Jane; son Jesse; daughters Elizabeth and Ruth; granddaughter Lydia Bond, only daughter of Mary Bond. Jesse Rice, Executor1 {p41}. His will was proved 19 Dec 17451 {p41}.

He married first, Mercy KERLEY 10 Nov 1708 at Marlborough3,1 {9, 41},2 {p4},45 {p5}. She was born 2 May 1681 at Marlborough3,45 {p5},46 {1:55}, died 16 Oct 1727, aged 46y 5m 14d at Marlborough (under the name Rice)3 {p386},56,1 {p41},45 {p5}, was buried at Marlborough, in Spring Hill Cemetery56,3, daughter of Capt. Henry KERLEY and Elizabeth. Joseph RICE and Mercy KERLEY resided in 1709 at Marlborough1 {p41}.

He married second, Elizabeth BRIGHAM 4 Dec 1728 at Marlborough (under the name Robinson)3 {p302},1 {p41},45 {p5}. She was born 24 Mar 1685, (28 May per county records) at Marlborough3, died 13 Oct 1733, aged 48y at Marlborough (under the name Rice)3 {p384},56,1 {p41},45 {p5}, was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56, daughter of Samuel BRIGHAM and Elizabeth HOWE.

He married third, Jane CORNEY 14 Nov 1734, (Oct 18 per Ward) at Boston, MA37 {p187},1 {p41},45 {p5}. She died about 17621 {p41},45 {p5}. She was also known as Jane COREY1 {p41}. The estate of Jane Rice was settled on 11 February 1762 by her stepson Jesse with an inventory of £31.7.2.

Children of Joseph RICE and Mercy KERLEY:

i
Capt. Jesse RICE, b. 1709, MA, d. 1771, MA
ii
Eleazer RICE [QQ1721, w351], born 26 Dec 1712 at Marlborough, MA3 {p155},1 {p41}. He died 14 Feb 1712/13 at Marlborough3 {p385},1 {p41}.
iii
Mercy RICE [QQ1722, w352], born 10 Nov 1714 at Marlborough3 {p159},1 {p41}. She died before 4 Sep 1744, as she was not mentioned in her father's will1 {p41}.
iv
Elizabeth RICE [QQ1723, w353], born 10 Nov 1714 at Marlborough, (not found in the published records)1 {p41}. She died 29 May 1752, aged 37y 6m 19d at Marlborough3 {p384},56,1 {p41}. She was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56. Elizabeth Rice's estate was administered by her brother Jesse. An inventory on 2 September 1752 came to £1335.1.4. Heirs were brother Jesse Rice and Lydia, wife of Benjamin Flood, Mary Bond's daughter.1 {p41}
v
Mary RICE, b. 1718, MA, d. 1744, MA
vi
Ruth RICE [QQ1725, w355], born 1 Sep 1721 at Marlborough3,1 {p41},2 {p55}. She died 1 Jul 1752, aged 30y at Marlborough (under the name Barns), second wife of John3,1 {p35},46 {1:15},56. She was buried at Marlborough, in Old Common Cemetery56. The published genealogies have consistently confused this Ruth Rice with her second cousin, the daughter of Edmund Rice. The correct identifications can be deduced from their ages at death, as shown on their gravestones. Another important clue is the reference to this Ruth in her father's will as an apparently unmarried daughter as of 1744.

She married John BARNES 8 Jan 1750/51 at Marlborough3,1 {p35}. He was born in 1716/17, (literally 1716) at Marlborough3, died 23 Jan 1785, aged 67y at Marlborough56,3, was buried at Marlborough, in Spring Hill Cemetery56,3, son of Deacon John BARNES and Hannah HOWE.

His will was proved 14 Jul 17721 {p42}.

He married Anne DARBY 25 Mar 1702 at Concord, MA, listed as Jonathan of Sudbury and Anne of Stow35 {p54},1 {p42},2 {p4},45 {p5},11,62,38. She was born about 16821 {p42}, died 23 Dec 1773, aged 91y at Sudbury, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p42}. She was also known as Anna DERBY1 {p9}. She married Jonathan HEYWOOD 23 Aug 1768 at Concord, listed as Jonathan of Concord and Rebecca of Sudbury35 {p222},11,62. He was born 3 Dec 1717 at Concord35 {p91},2 {p34}, died 18 Jul 1774, aged 56y35 {p434},56,2 {p34}, was buried at Concord, in Hill Cemetery35 {p434}, son of Deacon Samuel HEYWOOD and Elizabeth HUBBARD. vi
Katharine RICE [QQ1745, w363], born 16 Feb 1713/14, (6th per Ward) at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p42}. She died before May 1772, as she was not mentioned in her father's will1 {p42}.
vii
Hannah RICE [QQ1746, w364], born 14 Dec 1714 at Sudbury, (not found in the published records)1 {p42}. Your authors note that this person may not have existed. There is no record of her birth or marriage and no record of any children born in Sudbury to a Brintnal family whose mother was named Hannah. The birth date given by Ward looks suspiciously like a miscopied version of the birth date of the "next" sibling Ann. Indeed, the only evidence for her is a reference in Jonathan Rice's will to a "daughter Hannah Brintnal." It is possible that the reference was meant for granddaughter Hannah instead.

She married BRINTNAL. He was born about 1711 in probably Massachusetts.

Phineas RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Phineas RICE [QQ1294, w75] (Joseph2, Edmund1) , born 24 Aug 1682 at Marlborough, MA, son of Joseph (Sr) and Martha Rice according to the Marlborough vital records3 {p160},1 {9, 42},2 {p4}, son of Joseph RICE and Sarah PRESCOTT. He died 4 Sep 1768, (1763 per gravestone transcription), aged 86y at Grafton, MA, from rose cancer83,1 {p42},26 {5 Sept 1768}. He was buried at Grafton, in Old Cemetery83.

He married Elizabeth WILLARD 2 Oct 1707 at Sudbury, MA1 {9, 42},2 {p4},45 {p5},11 {260, 286}. She was born 10 Mar 1687/88 at Sudbury11 {p152},45 {p5}, died 9 Mar 1761 at Grafton, MA (under the name Rice)83,1 {p43}, daughter of Daniel WILLARD and Hannah CUTLER. Phineas RICE and Elizabeth WILLARD resided in 1708 at Sudbury, MA1 {p42}. They resided about 1726 at Stow, MA1 {p42}.

Children of Phineas RICE and Elizabeth WILLARD:

i
Hannah RICE [QQ1758, w368], born 15 Feb 1710/11 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p43},2 {39, 335},45 {p5}. Although the Sudbury vital records show only one marriage of a Hannah Rice to a John Barber, Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, ascribes that marriage to two different Hannahs of about the same age, daughters of Ephraim and Phineas, respectively. Ward gives the nod to Phineas' daughter. However, Ephraim Rice remained at Sudbury while Phineas Rice moved to Stow when both Hannahs were still teenagers. Compelling evidence that Hannah was the daughter of Ephraim is supplied by a letter written by John Barber on 11 July 1755, while at a military camp, to his wife Hannah in Sudbury (see NEHGR 27:286). In the letter, he reports that Isaac Rice is in the same camp with him and is well. Significantly, the end of the letter indicates it was actually sent (for transmittal to Barber's wife) to Gershom Rice, in Sudbury, New-England. Gershom and Isaac Rice, sons of Ephraim, would have been Hannah's brothers. Therefore, your authors must conclude that the Hannah Rice who married John Barber was Hannah (WRN 238), daughter of Ephraim Rice.22 {27:286}

She married Timothy DARLING 1 Jul 1756 at Grafton, MA83 {p192},1 {p43}. He was thinly documented.

Capt Nathan BRIGHAM

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Capt Nathan BRIGHAM [QQ1909, w79] (Mary3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1) , born 17 Jun 1671 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {11, 44},45 {p1},46 {1:49}, son of Thomas BRIGHAM and Mary RICE. He died 16 Feb 1746/47, aged 75y 8m at Marlborough1 {p44},3 {p349}. Your authors note that no marriage for this Nathan Brigham is found in the Marlborough vital records. Thus, the identification of his wife Elizabeth depends on indirect evidence. Her recorded age at death is sufficient: it matches exactly the recorded birth of Elizabeth Maynard and is fully nine years off from the birth of Elizabeth How. It is, of course, conceivable that Nathan married two different Elizabeths in succession, although, in that case, we would have not just one, but three, unrecorded events to explain (the two marriages and the death of the first wife). If that is indeed the case, then the first wife (Elizabeth How) might well be the mother of Nathan's children. Investigation of the How and Maynard probate records may shed light on this question.

He married first, Elizabeth MAYNARD about 1690, (1664 per Supplement, but that is actually Elizabeth's birth date) at Marlborough, (not found in the published records)45 {p6}. She was born 2 Apr 1664 at Marlborough (under the name Mainord)3,46 {1:48}, died 29 Mar 1733, aged 69 years less four days at Marlborough (under the name Brigham)3 {p347},1 {p44}, daughter of John MAYNARD and Mary GATES.

He married second, Elizabeth HOW, but this marriage is undocumented, despite Ward's implication that this was Nathan's first and only marriage. It may not have happened at all1 {p44}. She was born 25 May 1673 at Marlborough3, daughter of Isaac HOW and Frances WOODS. Capt Nathan BRIGHAM and Elizabeth HOW resided at Marlborough1 {p44}.

Gershom BRIGHAM [QQ1314, w83] (Mary3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1) , born 23 Feb 1680/81, (literally 1680) at Marlborough3,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},14 {p6},46 {1:49}, son of Thomas BRIGHAM and Mary RICE. He died 3 Jan 1748/49 at Marlborough1 {p11},2 {p15},14 {p6},3 {p347}. Occupation: a surveyor for the west end, in 1710 at Marlborough14 {p6}. Occupation: a "tythingman", in 171614 {p6}. Occupation: a constable, in 172114 {p6}. He was on the Committee to "seat the Meeting" in 172714 {p6}. He was a Selectman in 173314 {p6}.

He married first, Mehitabel WARREN 18 May 1703 at Medfield, MA51,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},14 {p6}. She was born 22 Apr 1684 at Medfield (under the name Warrin)51,14 {p6}, daughter of Joseph WARREN and Experience WHEELOCK.

He married second, Mehitable SPRING 17 Feb 1729/30 at Weston, MA, listed as Gershom of Marlborough and Mehitabel of Weston65 {p26},2 {p15},45 {p1}. She was thinly documented, daughter of Henry SPRING and Mehitable BARTLETT. Gershom BRIGHAM and Mehitable SPRING declared their intention to marry 28 Dec 1729 at Weston, listed as Gershom of Marlborough and Mehitabel Stimson of Weston65 {p24}.

Elnathan BRIGHAM

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Elnathan BRIGHAM [QQ1315, w84] (Mary3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1) , born 7 Mar 1683 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},46 {1:49}, son of Thomas BRIGHAM and Mary RICE. He died Oct 1758 at Coventry, CT2 {p15}.

He married Bethiah WARD 27 Jun 1705 at Marlborough, MA, (Elnathan's name is damaged in the original church record, and the published record lists him as (Jo)nathan - it also gives the date as June 17)3,1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},46 {1:202}. She was born about 1686 in probably Massachusetts, died 15 Apr 1765 at Coventry, CT2 {p15}. She was presumably the daughter either of Samuel and Sarah Ward (q.v.) or of William and Hannah Ward (q.v.). Both couples had daughters named Bethiah around 1682. Examination of the probate records for Samuel Ward may settle the issue.17 {4:414-15} They were living in 1741 at Mansfield, CT1 {p11}.

Children of Elnathan BRIGHAM and Bethiah WARD:

i
Uriah BRIGHAM [QQ3818], born 30 Apr 1706 at Marlborough, MA3,2 {p15},46 {1:35}. He died 9 Jul 1710 at Marlborough2 {p15},3 {p350}.
ii
Jerusha BRIGHAM [QQ3819], born about 1707/82 {p15}.

She married Benjamin ROBINSON in 1729 in Connecticut2 {p15}. He was born about 1705 in probably Massachusetts.
iii
Priscilla BRIGHAM, b. 1709, MA
iv
Dinah BRIGHAM [QQ3821], born 31 Aug 1711, (April per Rice Gen'l Register) at Marlborough, MA3 {p38},2 {p15}. She died 8 Mar 17492 {p15}. She is incorrectly called Levinah by the Rice Gen'l Register, apparently in confusion with the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah (q.v.) born 49 years later.2 {p15}

She married John FAY 16 Dec 1729, but we suspect this is a spurious marriage resulting from confusion over the recorded marriage on 16 December 1779 between John Fay and LEVINAH Brigham. There is no record of a marriage of DINAH Brigham to any John Fay in Marlborough or Westborough, nor of any children2 {p15}. He was thinly documented.
v
Prudence BRIGHAM [QQ3822], born 28 Jan 1714/15 at Marlborough3,2 {p15},46 {1:35}. She died 3 Feb 1714/15 at Marlborough2 {p15},3 {p349}.
vi
Elnathan BRIGHAM [QQ3823], born 7 Apr 1716 at Marlborough3,2 {p15},46 {1:35}.
vii
Paul BRIGHAM [QQ3824], baptized 7 Sep 1718 at Marlborough2 {p15},3 {p44}.

She married Jonas HOUGHTON 30 Jun 1710 at Marlborough1 {p11},2 {p15},45 {p1},3 {p231}. He was born 2 Sep 1682, (July per Rice Gen'l Register, but actually 7th month) in Massachusetts22 {79:398},2 {p15}, died 15 Aug 1739, aged 56y at probably Lancaster, MA, (at Bolton per Rice Gen'l Register)56,53 {p412},2 {p15}, was buried at Old Common Burial Ground, Lancaster, MA56, son of Jonas HOUGHTON and Mary BURBEANE. He was possibly born in Marlborough while the Lancastrians were in "exile". His father had returned to Lancaster by 1704 but perhaps left Jonas behind.48 Relocated about 1712 to Lancaster, MA48. He was admitted from Marlborough to the 1st Church 11 May 1718 at Lancaster53 {p271}.

He resided at Watertown Farms (Weston), MA64.

He married first, Hannah JONES 5 Jul 1693 at Sudbury, MA, listed as Hannah of Watertown11,1 {p11},2 {p16},45 {p1}. She was thinly documented. She was also known as Mary, (per Bond)48. The 1672 birth record in Watertown is for a Mary Jones, not Hannah. If this first wife was indeed born on that date, then there was only one wife, and the Sudbury marriage record is simply wrong about her name.
