President's Column

Dear Cousins,

Up to now our Y DNA study has been tied inextricably to our computer database. Dennis Rice had started transcribing Rice genealogical data from ERA published books and contributions of Rice cousins before I met him at the Worcester-Barre annual reunion in 1995. By then Dennis had already settled on The Master Genealogist as the best genealogy computer program. He has continued to work on this monumental task and some time ago finished transcribing all of Ward's The Rice Family and is well into other Rice books. I think he deserves a medal or some other tangible recognition for his years of devoted work!

Several other Rice cousins, especially George King and John Chandler, have also contributed to the database, principally by checking the accuracy and completeness of the genealogical data in the database against published primary records such as early vital records of town clerks. This meant that when we started the Y-chromosome DNA study we had accurate Rice data for the first 5 to 6 generations. Now, it is true that most living male Rices are in the 9th to 12th generations, but knowing the reliability of half or more of their pedigrees was of great help.

The Board of Directors discussed the future of the ERA database at its recent spring meeting in Sudbury. Dennis has decided that because of the pressure of his studies for a master's degree he will turn over the database to George who will merge and consolidate a large set of data he has validated and that is ready to be incorporated into the master database. Hopefully, at some time in the future, Dennis will return to the Herculean transcription task.

The Genetics Committee uses the database to prepare pedigrees of living male Rices who are prospective candidates for the Y DNA study. This is how we established the Edmund Rice Haplotype relatively quickly, but refinements are in order particularly concerning mutations. We can have additional loci tested for some of the Rice set of markers but other Rices have contacted us who have pedigrees close to those showing mutations.

It is the so-called 'Other Rices' who present a problem for the Genetics Committee. How do we handle someone who wants to submit a DNA sample for analysis that cannot connect, at least for now, to Edmund Rice? After discussion, we decided that through our arrangements with the FTDNA laboratory to let such males pay for their own samples and we will include the results in a table similar to many such posted on the Internet. That is, at least until it becomes too unwieldy.

If a male Rice/Royce, etc. turns out to have a different set of genetic markers from those attributed to Edmund Rice he may want to start his own Internet site. But if one or more Rice/Royce males turn out to have Edmund's haplotype then we will need to do a lot of genealogical detective work. This is where we need more help.

Anyone wanting to help research early records and document lines of descent should get in touch with George King. (See p. 4) Finally! Do not forget to make your reservation for the Rice Reunion, September 20th and 21st at Longfellow's Wayside Inn, Sudbury, Massachusetts.

Sincerely,

Robert V. Rice, President

Editor's Column

My thoughts have been running along the lines of relatedness recently. With Y chromosome testing, we established the Edmund Rice haplotype. With mtDNA testing, I learned I belong to Clan Helena, stretching back thousands of years in an unbroken line.

What about much more immediate relatedness, though; what about marriages between first or second cousins? Any increased medical or genetic problems? According to researchers, the risk of birth defects to children born to first or second cousins can be nearly twice that of children born to unrelated parents, but lower than many people, including family doctors, believe. An unrelated couple has about a 3 to 4 percent of having a child with a significant birth defect or genetic disease. Close cousins have an additional risk factor of 1.7 to 2.8 percent.

"The common sense point of this is that there is a definite risk, but the risk is rather small," said Dr. Arno G. Motulsky, professor of medicine and genome sciences at the University of Washington and one of the researchers.

Marriage of first cousins is illegal in 30 states but in some Middle East, Asia and Africa countries up to 60 percent of the population is blood related and cousin marriages are preferred to unrelated ones. Immigrants from those areas of the world continue that tradition in the U. S., so understanding the relative risks is important.

These results of an analysis of six published studies involving thousands of related couples appear in the April 2002 issue of the Journal of Genetic Counseling.

Interesting. I have great grandparents who were half first cousins.

Rice Reunion

September 20 & 21, 2002 Longfellow's Wayside Inn, Sudbury

Space is limited so it is important that we know well in advance how many will be attending each day. (Final reunion reservation forms that include the menu and cost of the Saturday luncheon will be mailed in August.). Let Ms. Jeanette Pollard know if you are planning to attend.

We are returning to Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury after an absence of many years. The Howe family of Sudbury founded the inn and, as we know, many Rice cousins have Howe connections. The grounds around the inn are extensive and include a working water wheel driven gristmill, a schoolhouse, gardens, a stone bridge, and a typical New England church.

Here are the activities planned for the reunion.

On Friday afternoon of the 20th, we plan to meet at the Wayland Historical Society in Wayland Center. Wayland was separated from Sudbury many years ago but it is the main location of the original Sudbury Plantation of 1638. (The old North Cemetery on Route 27 where Edmund Rice is buried and the boulder marking his homestead on Old Connecticut Path, now Route 126, are both in what is now Wayland.)

Professor George Lewis spoke at our reunion several years ago on the geography of old Sudbury and he has now prepared a remarkable, annotated map showing the location of many old Rice properties along Rice Road as well as elsewhere in present day Wayland.Using our ERA computer database, possible Rice ancestors have been connected to each house location, so after meeting at the Wayland Historical Society we plan to take a car caravan tour of these locations. The visits will include the Edmund Rice Homestead and Edmund's gravesite.

We have a room set aside in the Wayside Inn for our use during the afternoon. At 5:30 p.m. we will gather for a Dutch treat supper in the Wayside Inn dining room. (The Board of Directors meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the nearby Clarion Carriage House Inn, 738 Boston Post Road.)

Saturday morning, the 21st, we will meet in the Wayside Inn Ballroom where coffee and pastries will be available starting at 9 a.m. Cousins can socialize, buy Rice genealogy books and check out the Rice database set up on laptop computers. About 10:30 there will be a discussion of the Rice computer database and an opportunity to ask questions about adding individual lineages to it.

At 11:30,we will break to allow the staff to prepare for our noon luncheon. Our annual business meeting will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a discussion of our Y Chromosome study and a chance for cousins to ask further questions about the Rice Haplotype results.

Finally, those who were not able to take the long car tour on Friday can visit Edmund's grave in the old North Cemetery in Wayland.

- Bob Rice

Note: A very limited number of rooms have been set-aside for ERA Reunion attendees in the Wayside Inn. You must make reservations directly with the Inn (978.443.1776). There are also rooms available at the nearby Clarion Carriage House Inn (978.443.2223). The nearest budget motel is the Marlborough Super 8 (508.460.1000).

Howe, Elias (b. July 9, 1819, Spencer, Mass., U.S. d. Oct. 3, 1867, Brooklyn, N.Y.)
U.S. inventor whose sewing machine provided an impetus for the revolution of garment manufacture in the factory and in the home. Interested in machinery since childhood, Howe learned the machinist trade and worked in a cotton machinery factory in Lowell, Mass., and later in Cambridge. During this time it was suggested to him that the man who invented a machine that could sew would earn a fortune. For five years Howe spent all his spare time in the development of a practical sewing machine, and in 1846 he was granted a patent for it. The machine attracted little attention in the U.S. at first, and, when a fortune was not forthcoming, Howe sold the patent rights in England for £250 ($1,250). He moved to England and worked for £5 a week to perfect his machine for use in sewing leather and similar materials. As his financial condition worsened, he managed to send his family back to the U.S.; but when he finally returned destitute, he found his wife dying. Years of disappointment and discouragement followed. He found that, while he had been abroad, sewing machines were being widely manufactured and sold in the U.S. in violation of his patent. After much litigation, his rights were finally established in 1854, and from then until 1867, when his patent expired, he received royalties on all sewing machines produced in the U.S.

Our thanks to Lynn for her excellent research on the ancestry and life of Elias Howe. Another source on Elias, as the man "whose sewing machine prefigures the apparel industry and ready-to-make clothes", is found in a book by Gary Boyd Roberts in a chapter on Yankee inventors.  "I joined the Association recently when my granddaughter, a southern California gal, entered ... Williams College as a freshman in the current school year. My thought was that all my grandchildren might now take extra interest in their eastern roots and our country's colonial history ... . I received my first Newsletter and found the DNA Haplotype article especially interesting."

Keeping Up With the Rices

Needed: Enthusiastic, Nimble-fingered Volunteers

One thing we know about descendancy-based genealogy is that it has an unlimited field as new generations come along.  It is a comfort to know that we will always have more lines to follow. However, it is a daunting task to create a computer database with all of Edmund Rice's descendants in it, with names, dates, places, and documentation for all.  It is this project that Dennis Rice and others have undertaken.

We have the many Rice books as a starting point for data entry, but the books do contain some mistakes, and a great deal of effort has been devoted to cross-checking, flagging likely errors, and making corrections where possible -- so much so that the extended family of Edmund Rice (which numbers in the millions) is undoubtedly growing as fast as the database.

One way to tip the balance is to get more people involved. The growth of the database has benefited from cousins (mostly members, but some non-members as well) who have contributed their computer genealogy files to the project.  However, there is a great deal of genealogical material only on paper that has not been entered into the database and that has caused a large backlog. This is where volunteers can make a big difference. We need your help to enter material from such sources as pedigrees published in past newsletters and perhaps other notices that may or may not have been printed.

As a volunteer, you can work at your own pace with whatever genealogy software you like best, and electronic copies of the old newsletters will be supplied (ok, that's not exactly on 'paper', but the point is that it isn't in database form).  If you have a computer (and preferably access to email), you can help.  We will send you scanned images of the pages of interest; you enter the data (following the guidelines of a simple 'operator's manual') and send back the results.  In addition to the manual, we will have a training session at the September reunion for those who are interested.  Meanwhile, those who are eager to get to work can start immediately.  Anyone interested in helping, please contact John Chandler <jchbn@cuvmb.columbia.edu>.
